Excerpt from Common-Sense Poultry Doctor R salmon has aptly referred to a definition of disease as a life, the manifestations of which deviate more or less from the normal. Then to detect disease we must observe a devia tion from the normal. To Observe such deviation we must know what is normal. The normal condition in one's own flock may not be the general, healthy normal. Very frequently it is not. There are many flocks that, because of unsanitary conditions or poor feed ing, usually Show such general symptoms which are common to nearly all diseases, as dullness, roughness of plumage, etc., not per haps in as marked degree as in a sick fowl, but still enough to make the usual appearance of the fowls so different from that of fowls in perfect health and condition, that the first symptoms of disease are less conspicuous, and may pass for a long time unnoticed. This explains why so many poultry keepers describe as having appeared suddenly, symptoms which, to more experienced eyes, would have been plain long before, but which they did not observe until they became too pronounced to be overlooked by anyone. In a flock of fowls in vigorous health and good condition, any variation from the normal is immediately conspicuous. In a flock that is a little Off in condition and appearance all through, diseases may make a good deal of progress before their presence is suspected; A healthy fowl in good condition has a confident carriage. In the smaller and more energetic breeds this manifests itself generally in alertness, energetic movements, and bustling activity. In the larger fowls general movements are more deliberate and dignified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Poultry Common Sense: A Compendium of Useful Receipts, Formulas and Suggestions for Poultry Raisers; Including Monthly Pen, Egg and Hatching Records for One Year This book is not intended as a complete guide to poultry raisers, not even covering the whole list or category of essential features and elements of the business but merely a selection of the more important subjects which are briefly and so far as pos sible comprehensively and practically treated. The remedies given for the treatment of diseases are for the most part such as may be found in almost every home, yet have been tried and found to be reliable in the cure of those diseases for which they are recommended. Excerpt from The Practical Stock Doctor: A Reliable Common Sense Ready Reference Book, for the Farmer and Stock Owner N editing this work, it has not been with the intention of giving the stockman something that will take the place of the veterinarian; no book can do that; no amount of reading can take the place of his experience. The object has been to give those who wish to better acquaint themselves with the diseases of animals, an opportunity to do so; and especially is it for the stockman who is not within reach of a qualified veterinarian There are many such, even in the richest, most thrifty parts of our country, and there are others so far from a veterinarian, that it would require many hours of valuable time to get him. Excerpt from Common Sense Fowl Nutrition How well I would like to pay them, every one, a return visit! I remember how about 9570 of them would argue out their theories, then finally say: I have a great lot of trouble with chicks dying in the shell; my eggs are running most unfertile; my hens are dying in the summer from overfat; I can not raise June-hatched chicks; I used to think that the males were responsible for the sore spots on the combs, but find that they still continue when males are away; many of them die and when I dissect them, I find a very much enlarged liver, nearly covered with little white or yellow spots; many hens are dying during the molt. And there are dozens of other things that they may say. The whole thing points to improper feeding, which has resulted in the loss of stamina. Excerpt from Common Sense in the Poultry Yard: A Story of Failures and Successes, Including a Full Account of 1000 Hens and What They Did I have put the subject in the form of a story, in the hope that some who would be repelled by a mere treatise may find the work sufficiently interest ing to read it through. But although the principles and methods are strung on a slender thread of fiction, they are none the less true. Every house described, every device herein detailed, every method practiced, has been successfully used as related, so that the reader need not hesitate to put up coops and use them after these patterns. I have given the best practical results of years of experience, and not the mere imaginings of a theorist or a novelist.
