In this study it has been deemed proper to include brief statements of area, population, products, and producing possibilities; transportation, present and prospective; and finances, currency, and other subjects closely allied to commerce, with the thought that the information would not only be required by those desiring to study at the present moment economic conditions in these countries, but also be useful to general students, since the purpose has been to bring down to the latest available date facts of this character regarding all countries of the Western Hemisphere. The statement with reference to the United States has been made in great outlines only, since the details are presented in other publications of this Bureau, notably the Statistical Abstract of the United States and Commerce and Navigation of the United States, issued annually and to be obtained on application by any desiring further details of the commerce of the United States than those presented in this work. The total commerce of all America is of which is that of the United States and the remaining is distributed among the other countries of North, South, and Central America, and the West India islands.
