Many coastal areas of the United States are at risk for tsunamis. After the catastrophic 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, legislation was passed to expand U.S. tsunami warning capabilities. Since then, the nation has made progress in several related areas on both the federal and state levels. At the federal level, NOAA has improved the ability to detect and forecast tsunamis by expanding the sensor network. Other federal and state activities to increase tsunami safety include: improvements to tsunami hazard and evacuation maps for many coastal communities; vulnerability assessments of some coastal populations in several states; and new efforts to increase public awareness of the hazard and how to respond. Tsunami Warning and Preparedness explores the advances made in tsunami detection and preparedness, and identifies the challenges that still remain. The book describes areas of research and development that would improve tsunami education, preparation, and detection, especially with tsunamis that arrive less than an hour after the triggering event. It asserts that seamless coordination between the two Tsunami Warning Centers and clear communications to local officials and the public could create a timely and effective response to coastal communities facing a pending tsuanami. According to Tsunami Warning and Preparedness, minimizing future losses to the nation from tsunamis requires persistent progress across the broad spectrum of efforts including: risk assessment, public education, government coordination, detection and forecasting, and warning-center operations. The book also suggests designing effective interagency exercises, using professional emergency-management standards to prepare communities, and prioritizing funding based on tsunami risk.

The devastating impacts of tsunamis have received increased focus since the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, the most destructive tsunami in over 400 years of recorded history. The tsunamis that occurred as a result of the earthquake in Japan in March 2011 further emphasized the need for detection, monitoring, and early-warning technologies. This professional reference is the first of its kind: it provides a globally inclusive review of the current state of tsunami detection technology and will be a much-needed resource for oceanographers and marine engineers working to upgrade and integrate their tsunami warning systems. It focuses on the two main tsunami warning systems (TWS): International and Regional. Featured are comparative assessments of detection, monitoring, and real-time reporting technologies. The challenges of detection through remote measuring stations are also addressed, as well as the historical and scientific aspects of tsunamis. Offers readers the only source of practical content on the technological details of the subject Written by a tsunami detection and monitoring expert who has 32 years of experience in the field Companion web site featuring multi-media components, timely updates on fast-paced technological developments, and an online forum where scientists can exchange ideas, discuss technological updates and provide the author with valuable feedback

In The Coming Tsunami, pastor and cultural scholar Dr. Jim Denison addresses the gravest threat Christians in America have ever faced—four cultural tidal waves threatening to submerge Christians in America and the biblical morality they proclaim. Through proactive, biblical steps, he helps us redeem these challenges so that we can live the way Jesus calls us to live. This book is a warning sign. The coming cultural tsunami is the gravest threat Christians in America have ever faced. Caused by four cultural “earthquakes,” the cultural acceptance of four specific ideologies has seismically shifted our world. With the rise of a “post-truth” culture, the expansion of the sexual revolution, the attraction of Critical Theory, and the advance of secular religion, Christians are increasingly labeled as intolerant, irrelevant, oppressive, and dangerous—the antithesis of the life Jesus calls Christians to live. These tidal waves are threatening to submerge Christians in America and the biblical morality they proclaim. And the ultimate repercussions of these issues—the coming tsunami—have yet to be fully experienced. In The Coming Tsunami, pastor and cultural scholar Dr. Jim Denison of the Denison Forum: assesses how our current culture came to be, identifies the enormous danger these cultural quakes represent, explores their consequences for evangelicals and our larger culture, and offers proactive, biblical steps to redeem these challenges as opportunities for God's word and grace. The coming cultural tsunami will greatly impact Christians in the coming years. It will undoubtedly influence and affect your children and grandchildren. However, unlike tsunamis in nature, which cannot be stopped once they have been created, it's not too late to stop the moral tsunamis of our day. But Christians must act now. The rain is falling.

The innovation in space technologies has generated a new method for observing and monitoring tsunamis from space. Most tsunami remote sensing studies focus on using classical image processing tools or conventional edge detection procedures. However, these methods do not use modern physics, applied mathematics, signal communication, remote sensing data and innovative space technologies. This book equips readers to understand how to monitor tsunamis from space with remote sensing technology art to create a better alarm warning system.

Artificial intelligence and automation are having a huge impact on the world, and every worker needs to be prepared for the massive impact they will have on the job market. Some experts are optimistic about job creation, others are pessimistic about job loss, but studies show the potential loss of tens of millions of jobs around the world, even hundreds of millions. Surfing the Tsunami is an easy to read introduction to artificial intelligence by author and educator Todd Kelsey, who has helped thousands around the world to learn about technology. The book is designed for anyone who wants to navigate the wave of disruption that is coming, instead of being swallowed by it: students, professionals, government leaders. The main theme of the book is about three options for responding: * Adapt (good): learn more and pay attention; keep aware of where things are headed * Adopt (better): adopt AI-related tools and platforms, so you can be involved in managing AI * Adept (best): get directly involved with developing AI, by learning coding and how to work with related data What This Book is Not: comprehensive reference of every aspect of AI. What This Book Is: conversational, informal, personal, data-driven introduction to artificial intelligence, its impact on the job market, and options for responding. A powerful tool to develop conviction and sustainable motivation to learn more. This book is for anyone who wants to learn more, and consider various perspectives on AI and make an informed decision. No technical expertise of any kind is required; the book has everything you need to get started, points to many helpful resources, and introduces insightful perspective from a variety of people. Chapter 1 discusses why any reader should take AI seriously, and looks at the way that artificial intelligence relates to automation and the job market. Chapter 2 reviews various ways that AI has been transforming society behind the scenes, and how it is poised to come to the forefront. Chapter 3 is a collection of articles, studies and analysis, with commentary, which presents data for readers to review and consider, as motivation to take AI very seriously. The information is designed to convince readers to take action, and build the habit of learning more about AI on an ongoing basis. In Chapters 4-6, readers are invited to: Adapt (good): keep an eye on things; keep yourself informed; and see what happens. Adopt (better): you can adopt AI platforms and automation tools as they arise, and hopefully be the ones who manage AI and automation. Adept (best): readers are invited to seriously consider becoming adept and involved in AI in some way. The book is especially designed to encourage and challenge people who ask, "how could I ever do that?" and seeks to convince them with data, to consider another possibility: "how could I ever not do that?" Chapter 7 takes a look at people and perspectives in AI, and includes both profiles and interviews with thought leaders involved in artificial intelligence, deep learning, neural networks and machine learning. Chapter 8 reviews suggested options for next steps to take, including advanced books to read and courses that can be taken in person or online. The main idea of this book is to invite you to take AI very seriously, and to think of your response to AI as an adventure. No matter how AI disrupts and impacts our world, you can make this journey of your own choosing. And if you find yourself alarmed by the data you can choose to live in readiness, not fear.

Annals of natural disasters have always caused common interest. Scientists and specialists of various domains, teachers, students, post-graduates, journalists .. and merely inquisitive can find useful and didactic information in such annals~ Sad experience of the natural disasters endured gives very important material for humanity. It allows us not only to understand better the phenomenon itself, but also to prepare ourselves for future cataclysms, which our "Mother-Nature" is so rich in. The book by Sergey Soloviev and a group of his collaborators represents a detailed description of tsunami waves and accompanying phenomena in the Mediterranean Sea over a period of approximately four thousand years. Sergey Soloviev, the founder and recognised leader of the Russian scientific school of tsunami researchers, was unable to see the publication of this book, passing away on March 9, 1994. However, his ample experience in investigation and systematisation of tsunami waves for the Pacific area [Soloviev and Go, 1974, 1975; Soloviev, Go and Kim, 1986] has been widely used in compiling this book. The Mediterranean coasts are the cradle of civilisation. Written accounts of past disasters in this region of the Earth are rather numerous and highly reliable. Therefore the results of the tsunami study in the Mediterranean Sea are of specific value both for the scientific community and for humanity at large.
