Excerpt from Christopher Columbus and the Discovery of America There are few of the great personages in history who have been more talked about and written about than Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of America. We are apt to look upon Columbus as a person who knew that there existed a great undiscovered continent, and who made his way directly to the discovery of that continent. Whereas, the dream of Columbus's life was to make his way by an unknown route to what was considered to be known. Excerpt from Columbus or the Discovery of America The forty years occurring from A. D. 1490 to A. D. 1530 included five events of a most remarkable character, The Expulsion of the [floors from Spain, - the Discovery of Ame rica by Columbus, -the Conquest of Mexico by Cortes, - the Conquest of Peru by Pizur ro, - and the Reformation by M artin Luther. The first four are intimately connected with the Spanish monarchy; the last, only general ly so. On the condition of Spain, the four produced the most important changes. Why they produced not greater, is a question, the investigation of which will suggest instructive considerations to the student of history, Who reads, not for mere amusement, but that he may the better understand the principles of the ad ministration of Divine Providence. Excerpt from Columbus and His Discovery of America The daring mariner shall urge far O'er The Western wave, a smooth and level plain, Albeit the earth is fashioned like a wheel. Man was in ancient days of grosser mould, And Hercules might blush to learn how far Beyond the limits he had vainly set The dullest sea-boat soon shall wing her way. Men shall descry another hemisphere, Since to one common centre all things tend; SO earth, by curious mystery divine, Well balanced hangs amid the starry Spheres. At our Antipodes are cities, states And thronged empires ne'er divined of yore. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, and the Origin of the North American Indians The Norwegians claim their share of the glory, on grounds rather better than the Welsh. By their settlements in Iceland and Greenland, they had arrived within so small a distance of the new world, that there is at least a possibility of its having been touched at by a people so versed in maritine affairs, and so adventurous, as the ancient Normans were. The proofs are much more numerous than those produced by British historians, for the discovery is mentioned in several Islandic manuscripts. Excerpt from The Voyages of Christopher Columbus: The Story of the Discovery of America, as Told by the Discoverer Two hemispheres vie with each other in commemor ating the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America and honoring the memory of its great discov erer. Church and state do their utmost to enhance the impressiveness of the celebration. The beauties of the Catholic liturgy and the resources of secular pomp are exhausted to make the festivities worthy Of the great event commemorated and of the hero honored. The solemn ser vices oi the Church, the illumination and decoration of towns and cities, the erection of statues, eloquence, music, and the dramatic art - all contribute to the splendors of this international holiday. To crown all, Europe Asia, Africa and Australia, have sent their choicest products in science and art to the Exposition organized by the great republic of the New World, in honor of the great Genoese discoverer. Excerpt from Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America It is, however, wholly aside from my purpose to enter into any controversy over Columbus. It is enough to say that the part he played in the great drama of the discovery and subsequent development of America was no less important than it was dramatic; but, as it is my purpose to show, the real impor tance of his part in the discovery was due not to the man him self, but to those he represented, the company, so to speak, he carried with him to America. Himself a Genoese adven turer, just as ready to sail in the service of France or England as of Portugal or Spain, it so chanced he did sail in the service of Spain, with results for Spain, Europe, the New World, and indeed for the whole human race, to some of which I now propose to refer. It is necessary to say only one word more in regard to the discovery of America. Before doing so I want to repeat and emphasize the belief that nothing which scholars can unearth or critics suggest can, or in my judgment should, detract from the brilliancy of the exploit of Columbus, or the admiration it exacts. He sailed due West into the unknown in order to reach the East. He did it; and he alone did it. The fact that the Norsemen had five centuries before done what he now did in no wise detracts from the splendor of the achievement. The scientific result was his he is entitled to all credit for it.
