The Portuguese Colonial Empire established its base in Africa in the fifteenth century and would not be dissolved until 1975. This book investigates how the different populations under Portuguese rule were represented within the context of the Colonial Empire by examining the relationship between these representations and the meanings attached to the notion of ‘race’. Colour, for example, an apparently objective criterion of classification, became a synonym or near-synonym for ‘race’, a more abstract notion for which attempts were made to establish scientific credibility. Through her analysis of government documents, colonial propaganda materials and interviews, the author employs an anthropological perspective to examine how the existence of racist theories, originating in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, went on to inform the policy of the Estado Novo (Second Republic, 1933–1974) and the production of academic literature on ‘race’ in Portugal. This study provides insight into the relationship between the racist formulations disseminated in Portugal and the racist theories produced from the eighteenth century onward in Europe and beyond.

The newest volume in MMP's "Rainbow Series" covers the colors and markings of all the piston-engine fighters that served with the Portuguese military from the end of WW1 to the 1960s. A small nation with modest-sized air arms, Portugal nonetheless used a wide variety of iconic fighter aircraft over this period, from the SPAD S.VII of WW1 to the F-47 Thunderbolt after WW2. French, British and American aircraft were used, including such famous types as the Hawker Fury and Hurricane, the Spitfire and the Bell P-39 Airacobra. This profusely illustrated book covers all these aircraft, with brief details of their service use and comprehensive details of the colors and markings they carried. Besides the many photos, full color profiles illustrate the markings used. Detailed color notes and precise description and illustration of national markings over the period complete a book that will be invaluable to aircraft enthusiasts, historians and modelers. Brief author biog./credentials: The authors are keen students of aviation history, with a longtime interest in their country's military aircraft.

When you get to Lisbon, Portugal, the first thing you notice is all the color and contrast. It is as though there is a pallet of color set before your eyes like a fine old painting. Award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan, was struck with this concept. More important even than the museums was the color that seemed to pop out at her; and she felt that this was not only what a child would notice, but it was also a perfect opportunity to show them the art of the streets where they could call out the colors gleefully. Dyan believes a place is always more about what you see with your eyes and feel in your heart. A place can tell you about the people in the way even the simple streets present themselves. This is not to say that visiting a museum is not something unimportant, and our travelers do show you some of those. It is simply that you need to see through the eyes of your child, and try to see what they see and then build upon that--everything you do and every place you go can be a new, wonderful lesson--and you don t even have to work very hard to teach that lesson if you tune into a few key things, things to make a kid think and create and become excited about what it means to learn! This book is not filled with boring facts. This book is filled with purpose as are all the Dyan/Weigand travel books---purpose and fun!
