Excerpt from Collections of the Maine Historical Society, Vol. 9 The delay in the publication of this volume has been due to various causes, the chief of which was the lamented death of the Hon. Israel Washburn, Jr., Chairman of the Committee of Publication, and the issue, meantime, of the third volume of the Documentary series containing the Trelawny Papers. On account of the large number of papers which had accumulated, the Committee have thought it inexpedient to begin with this volume the publi cation of the Proceedings of the Society, and they have therefore made it the ninth volume of the Collections instead of the first volume of a new series. It is, of course, to be understood that the writers of the papers are alone responsible for the views which they advance. Excerpt from Index to the Collections of the Maine Historical Society, Vol. 1 of 9 The Gothic numerals refer to the volumes; the Roman numerals to the prefatory pages; the Arabic numerals refer to the pages, and when the latter is followed by an a the reference is either to Mr. Folsom's discourse, which is paged separately in the first part of the second volume, or to the note printed before page one hundred and eleven in volume eight. The French prefixes De, La, etc., I have entered under the letters L and D when they are a part of the name; when they are not a part of the name they will be found under the first letter of the name, thus Du Monts and La Tour are under the D's and L's, while Jean Vincent, Baron de St. Castine will be found under the S's. To find geographical names the reader will look under the proper name and also under the geographical term, as it is often customary to use the prefix as a part of the name; thus we have Hudson river and Delaware bay, also River St. Lawrence and Bay of Fundy. In the spelling of surnames and the names of the Indians, I have generally followed the orthography of the author of each article, but in nearly all cases I have referred to another spelling. In many cases no Christian names are given in the articles. These I have added when I have been able to find them. Very often, however, I have not succeeded in my search, therefore I have followed the name with a dash, giving any title, such as Capt., Rev., etc., that may belong to them. Excerpt from Collections of the Maine Historical Society, Vol. 7 The spelling of the original name of Penobscot was a difficult matter with the early French, in this country, for it was spelled by them, as our late Secretary, Doctor Ballard, discovered, in not far from sixty different ways - Panouamske, Panawanskek, Pamnaouamske, Panahamsequet, Panamske, Panaomske, Panaouamsde, Panaouamske, Panouamske, Panoumsque, Panouske are some of the forms. The English did better; they caught the sound, "Penobscot," and kept it. It is difficult to determine when the English established that pronunciation. We find it thus spelled in Strachey's account of the expedition that sailed from England, in 1606, to establish the Popham Colony. He says that, on the eight of September, "Captain Gilbert with twenty-two others departed in the shallop for the river of Penobscot." Strachey, however, wrote in 1618. Captain John Smith was upon the coast in 1614 and visited Penobscot. The name does not appear in the journal of Weymouth's voyage, in 1605, although it is believed, by many, that the Panobscot was the river he visited. At the time Champlain sailed up the river, in the autumn of 1605, it was called, by the savages, "Pentagoet."
