Excerpt from Collections of the Maine Historical Society, Vol. 7 The long interval since the last issue of our collections has been occasioned by various circumstances. The recent war proving a serious embarrassment in the work of publication; the lamented removal by death of the accomplished and efficient editor of the preceding volumes; the slow accumulation of materials for a new issue and the distinct enterprise undertaken by the Society, under the auspices of the state government, of a series of volumes on the Documentary History of Maine; have contributed to arrest this special work of the Society. Excerpt from Collections and Proceedings of the Maine Historical Society, 1890, Vol. 1 The recent visit of our Society to the home of Knox in Maine, and the more recent commemoration of the siege, in which he was so prominent an actor, renders a brief review of his life and character not inappropriate to the present occasion. Excerpt from Collections and Proceedings of the Maine Historical Society, Vol. 3: Second Series His school life was finished when he was about fif teen years oi age, and for a year he found employ ment in a commission store on Exchange street. He then decided to become a printer, being moved thereto by a belief that in this business he could have better opportunities for intellectual improvement. In 1842, Benjamin Kingsbury was publisher of the True Amer ican, which was the short-lived organ of the Tyler administration. Young Elwell entered the office of that paper, became an expert compositor, and soon began to try his hand as a contributor not only to the paper on which he was employed but to the two other daily papers of that time, the Advertiser and the Ar gus. He wrote anonymously, but his letters were so well considered and so neatly expressed that they were in every case promptly published. When the publica ti0n of the True American was suspended at the close of the administration it had supported Mr. Elwell. Excerpt from Collections and Proceedings of the Maine Historical Society, Vol. 8 For two centuries and a half the name of Cutts has been a prominent one in the annals of Maine. Those who brought this name to our shores came from England about the middle of the seventeenth century. John and Richard, both in their young manhood, settled at Strawberry Bank, now Portsmouth, near the mouth of the Piscataqua, prior to 1646. Bringing with them capital to some extent, they became leading merchants and at length the wealthiest men in the colony. John was made a member of the Council for the government of the Province, and in 1679, by royal appointment, he became the first president of the Province. Robert Cutts, a brother of John and Richard, came to the Piscataqua a few years later. For a while he resided in Portsmouth, in the Great House which had been the residence of Richard Cutts, but which was originally built by the first settlers as the manor house of John Mason, the grantee of the Province. Excerpt from Collections and Proceedings of the Maine Historical Society, 1891, Vol. 2 It has been too much taken for granted by the local historians that Captain Jones sided with the Tories in the struggle for independence. If he did, it is difficult to understand why Judge Jones, his nephew, who was admitted into all his counsels, was such a zealous pa triot and republican. Captain Jones probably felt as merchants generally do when war, that interrupts all their commerce and threatens destruction to all their fortunes, impends. The difficulties with the home gov ernment he believed and hoped would be settled. Be side, he was in the enemy's power and had to make the best terms he could. He wanted to extricate his family and household effects, as well as his vessels, from Boston, then in possession of the king's forces under strict military law, and he could only do so by agreeing to take back in his vessels cargoes of lumber to be used in constructing barracks for the Englishtroops, for which he was to be fully paid. That he stood well with the promoters of the revolution is ev ident from the fact that the selectmen of Boston fur nished him with a petition to the people of Machias, desiring them not to hinder him in his enterprise. He seems to have proceeded with the prudence character istic of his calling; for before opening his hatches and offering his goods for sale he exacted from the people a stipulation that they, on their part, would not molest him. He tried to get an obligation generally signed by the citizens by which they were to bind themselves to allow him to carry lumber to Boston and protect him and his property. But this many of the people refused to sign, and then, at his desire, a town meet ing was called, which must have been somewhat stormy. At last a vote, not unanimous, was Obtained to permit the vessels to load and sail, and Jones began to open his hatches and retail his goods to his Old customers. But it is said he made a discrimination, refusing credit to those who had been prominent in obstructing his wishes, so that on the whole there was more exaspera tion Of feeling than hearty accord produced by the vote of the town extorted under such circumstances. But it is probable that the permission granted in the vote would have been carried out in good faith had not the captain of the Margaretta unnecessarily pro voked a quarrel with the inhabitants.
