Between three and four thousand civilians, primarily Serbian and Jewish, were murdered in the Novi Sad massacre of 1942. Hungarian soldiers and gendarmes carried out the crime in the city and surrounding areas, in territory Hungary occupied after the German attack on Yugoslavia. The perpetrators believed their acts to be a contribution to a new order in Europe, and as a means to ethnically cleanse the occupied lands. In marked contrast to other massacres, the Horthy regime investigated the incident and tried and convicted the commanding officers in 1943-44. Other trials would follow. During the 1960s, a novel and film telling the story of the massacre sparked the first public open debate about the Hungarian Holocaust. This book examines public contentions over the Novi Sad massacre from its inception in 1942 until the final trial in 2011. It demonstrates how attitudes changed over time toward this war crime and the Holocaust through different political regimes and in Hungarian society. The book also views how the larger European context influenced Hungarian debates, and how Yugoslavia dealt with memories of the massacre.

From the author of The Last Thing You Said, a YA romance about a girl on a boys hockey team who happens to fall for the team captain. Holland Delviss wants to be known for her talent as a hockey player, not a hockey player who happens to be a girl. So, to keep her spot on the boys’ varsity team, she has rules: Practice harder than anyone else, even if that means 5 A.M. training sessions. Keep a low profile, even if that means ignoring trolls calling her a distraction, a gimmick, or worse. But when her team is selected for HockeyFest, a televised statewide event, Holland becomes the lead story (Goodbye, rule #2!). Not everyone is thrilled with Holland’s new fame, but there’s one person who fiercely supports her, and it’s the last person she expects: her bossy team co-captain, Wes. And Wes begins surprising her. He shares her passion for ’80s glam metal, and his touch feels strangely electric. With the cameras set to roll, Holland is dangerously close to breaking yet another rule: No dating teammates, ever. A deeply romantic and empowering novel about shutting out the noise from the crowd, so you can listen to your heart. A Junior Library Guild Selection “A fun romp of a teen romance via an exciting hockey season, this book has all the right ingredients—a spunky, multifaceted main character, a love interest who turns out to be a decent individual, and plenty of internal and external conflict. . . . A teenage love story steamy enough to melt the ice in the rink.” —Kirkus Reviews “A fun read that simultaneously puts the reader into the hockey world as an insider and an outsider. . . . It’s a last-act gut punch that really puts a spotlight on what female athletes have to deal with. A must-read for anyone who has had to defy expectations.” ?Booklist

Prisoners suffer in every conflict, but American servicemen captured during the Korean War faced a unique ordeal. Like prisoners in other wars, these men endured harsh conditions and brutal mistreatment at the hands of their captors. In Korea, however, they faced something new: a deliberate enemy program of indoctrination and coercion designed to manipulate them for propaganda purposes. Most Americans rejected their captors’ promise of a Marxist paradise, yet after the cease fire in 1953, American prisoners came home to face a second wave of attacks. Exploiting popular American fears of communist infiltration, critics portrayed the returning prisoners as weak-willed pawns who had been “brainwashed” into betraying their country. The truth was far more complicated. Following the North Korean assault on the Republic of Korea in June of 1950, the invaders captured more than a thousand American soldiers and brutally executed hundreds more. American prisoners who survived their initial moments of captivity faced months of neglect, starvation, and brutal treatment as their captors marched them north toward prison camps in the Yalu River Valley. Counterattacks by United Nations forces soon drove the North Koreans back across the 38th Parallel, but the unexpected intervention of Communist Chinese forces in November of 1950 led to the capture of several thousand more American prisoners. Neither the North Koreans nor their Chinese allies were prepared to house or feed the thousands of prisoners in their custody, and half of the Americans captured that winter perished for lack of food, shelter, and medicine. Subsequent communist efforts to indoctrinate and coerce propaganda statements from their prisoners sowed suspicion and doubt among those who survived. Relying on memoirs, trial transcripts, debriefings, declassified government reports, published analysis, and media coverage, plus conversations, interviews, and correspondence with several dozen former prisoners, William Clark Latham Jr. seeks to correct misperceptions that still linger, six decades after the prisoners came home. Through careful research and solid historical narrative, Cold Days in Hell provides a detailed account of their captivity and offers valuable insights into an ongoing issue: the conduct of prisoners in the hands of enemy captors and the rules that should govern their treatment.

I will die up here in the high mountains, she thought. And be like Solanda, Mothers old friend, who vanished as the deer vanish. (A demon tricked me by looking like a boy). You climb too high, the hunter said, squatting down on his haunches and leaning against a boulder. Nothing eat up here. Mira finally got her voice: Why are you here? I follow you. He smiled. Mira stared down the great mountain, knowing she was trapped, that she had climbed too high where monsters are. He had stalked her like a deer. And she had been as foolish as a deer. To kill me? He gave her a surprised, then puzzled look. Why I want to kill you? To give the gods their sacrifice. He looked at her for a long time, and Mira felt strange. He was handsome, his hair and beard night-black, his blue eyes arrogant, confident. A smile that was very close to a smirk. He was a savage-looking boy, but she saw that he was a boy, not two seasons older than her. His deerskin leggings were well-used and torn ragged, made by skillful hands, but not any of the river tribes. Slung over his back was a very ornate spear thrower. A brace of feathered arrows in a wolfskin pouch flared out of his back. His right fist gripped a long spear crowned with a tooth of flint. Rawhide thongs belted his leggings; on his waistbelt a stone hatchet and long stone knife were strapped. His arms and legs rippled with savage muscles. Mira clutched her little pointed stick. She edged down the mountain slope, to see what he would do. Why did you follow me? He was a shadow now, against the boulder, but she could see his white teeth grinning. You are very pretty, he called out of the evening. He didnt follow her. He wasnt going to hurt her. She scuttered down the slope, grinning now, heart pounding and sudden blood in her face. What he said to me! You climb too high, Pretty One! his voice echoed behind her, making a crazy thrill in her stomach. Run home before it gets dark. Her face burned red. Why! she called, grinning over her shoulder. Because a knife-tooth has come to this mountain.
