The Aerial Photographs Shown In This Book Add A New Dimension To Our Viewing Pleasure- The Third Dimension. Most Of Us Have To Be Content With Two Dimensional Pictures Taken At The Ground Level. Twenty Six Main Forts Of Western India Have Been Selected, Taking Into Consideration Their Strength, Location And Their Place In History And Culture. They Have Been Arranged According To Their Location-Island Forts, Coastal Forts And Inland Forts, In Each Case Starting From The North And Proceeding South. The Photographs Show The Ruins Of The One Great And Formidable Forts. This Is Due To The Ravages Of Time As Well As The Policy Of The East India Company Which Supplanted The Marathas In 1818 As The Paramount Power In India. The New Masters Of India`S Destiny Destroyed Almost Every Single Fort In Western India As They Did Not Want To Leave Any Focal Point Where Freedom Would Flourish Again. Yet These Ruins Can Transport One To Those Days Gone By And Their Pristine Glory. One Only Needs A Feel For History And Some Imagination. The Forts Are An Integral And Important Part Of Medieval History And Their Ruins Are Our Priceless Heritage, To Be Preserved And Cherisged. However, There Are So Many Forts, Big And Small, That Physical Preservation Of All Of Them Will Be Well Nigh Impossible. But They Can Certainly Be Preserved In Print In A Kind Of A Gazetteer, Which Will Have All Available Information About Their History, Location, Layout, And Other Details. Photographs Form An Important Part Of This Process And This Volume Is A Small Step In That Direction. An Introduction Takes The Readers On A Short Journey To The Forts And The Climate Of History In Which They Functioned. Each Photograph Has A Brief Text Placed Opposite, Giving Some Details About The Fort. At The Same Time It Should Be Noted That A Photograph, However Good, Cannot Be A Substitute For A Visit To The Fort. And If A Traveller Chooses His Time And Route With Care, The Ruins Will Unfold, Vividly And Tantalisingly The Ambience Of The Fort And Those By-Gone Days.

The Arabian Sea (AS) shows marked seasonal changes in the current pattern due to the reversal of monsoon winds. The main aim of the study is to understand and interpret the surface and sub-surface processes associated with the winds and fluxes. The various processes which determine the characteristics of the region such as Mini Cold Pool, Mini Warm Pool, Upwelling/Downwelling, and Temperature Inversion are also simulated. Computed sea surface elevation, currents, temperature and salinity have been analyzed to understand physical and dynamical processes of the region. The effect of remote forcing like Kelvin wave and river discharge along the eastern AS is also studied. It is inferred that the currents in the Gulf of Khambhat near North Easten Arabian Sea during summer monsoon are onshore and prevents low-saline waters to advect offshore as the rivers discharge freshwater in the region. In the transition period, the prevailing currents slowly turn into offshore and continue till winter. These offshore currents would help in flushing out the low-saline waters during this season that were trapped during monsoon season as the currents were not favourable.

The world's continental shelves are the sites of vast resources of food, energy and minerals, the exploitation of which is continuously increasing. Fluctuating global sea levels throughout the Quaternary period produced multiple transgressive and regressive cycles that profoundly affected and shaped these shelves. The complex interactions among climate, sea level, tectonics, oceanography and sediment input have formed distinctive sediment packages on each shelf and provide a guide to the interpretation of older shelf sequences throughout the geological record. This Memoir compiles studies on 23 selected shelves from all the continents, focusing on their evolution and examining the patterns of sedimentation during the past approximately 125 000 years. In addition to providing basic background information for each area, the chapters consider specific aspects of continental shelf research, from seismic stratigraphy to geomorphology, from palaeoceanography to palaeo sea-level reconstruction and from palaeontology to geochemistry.
