Excerpt from Clinical Surgical Diagnosis for Students and Practitioners When Dieffenbach summarized his views on trephining, in his classical work, some sixty years ago, before the question was definitely settled, he wrote as follows: - "Up to quite recently it was the first urgent duty of the surgeon, immediately after the injury, to make a large crucial incision, and to search for fissures or fractures. Occasionally I found on my arrival that the hairy portion of the head had been ploughed up by incisions, backwards and forwards, crucial and transverse. This was considered to be indispensable in all head injuries. A surgeon who had omitted to make the crucial incision would have incurred the same responsibility as one who failed to open the window in endeavouring to rescue a victim of coal gas suffocation." At that time there was no "cerebral diagnosis"; but nevertheless the surgeon's need for a diagnosis had to find some expression. To leave an injury to Nature, without knowing whether or not a fissure was present, was considered to be an unworthy and culpable piece of surgical inactivity, because the real danger of a fractured skull had not yet been clearly ascertained. Philosophical speculation took the place of observation, and therefore surgery for a long time was guilty of one of its greatest sins, in breaking the law primum nil nocere. We smile at this kind of diagnosis; but posterity will look upon some of our exploratory procedures, involving flaps of half the skull, much in the same way as we regard those meaningless "crucial and transverse incisions." The maxim "nil nocere" must be observed, not only in treatment, but also in examination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Surgical Diagnosis: A Manual for Students and Practitioners Until the last few decades the surgeon's efforts were limited to organs lying on the surface and directly accessible. Aseptic methods and improvements in operative technique have meantime brought the internal organs within the range of successful treatment, and this enlargement of the surgical field has necessitated the introduction of new methods of diagnosis and improvements upon the old. In the present volume the author has endeavored to cover the whole subject concisely and in its modern development. Excerpt from Clinical Surgery: For the Instruction of Practitioners and Students of Surgery Many practitioners who have honored the author by visiting his clinic have requested that a work on Clinical Surgery be written by him, giving as nearly as possible the methods adopted in actual practice. This request has been met by the statement that the author lays no claim to the invention of a single new operation, nor has he produced a new or modified instrument, but has contented himself with applying to his surgical work what seemed best in the practice of the surgeons of the past and present, many times without knowing by whom the various methods were modified before they were accepted and used by him. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Surgical Diagnosis: Designed as a Manual for Practitioners and Students in Medicine Scarcely more than a year has yet elapsed since the first edition of this work was given to the public. At that time, the question whether the plan of the book would meet professional favor was certainly an open one, and it affords some personal gratification that the increasing demand for the work, both as a text-book and as an aid to the general practitioner, justifies a revision of its matter and an addition to its former pages. I have changed my opinion somewhat since this work was first issued, as to the advisability of employing the plan of contrast of symptoms, in the form of differential tables, to the exclusion of de scriptive text; as I have found that, however valuable they might be as a summary to the student, or as an aid to the practitioner at the bedside, such tables alone will not fill the requirements of a text-book, or be as generally useful as if accompanied by a concise and general enumeration of the etiology and symptomatology of each of the more important diseases to which the attention of the surgeon is most often directed, and which must, therefore, form the basis of most lectures given to the student. Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Surgical Diagnosis: Designed as a Manual for Practitioners and Students The work, in its present form, cannot be called elementary in any sense, nor is that, in my opinion, a desirable quality in a text-book; but it will, I trust, be found improved by the additions made, and better fitted for the purpose for which it was at first intended. Excerpt from Atlas of Clinical Surgery, Vol. 1: With Special Reference to Diagnosis and Treatment for Practitioners and Students Those who are acquainted with the history of medicine know that, even in ancient times, it was sought to represent pictures of diseases by the aid of plastic art. No wonder then that, at the present day, when medicine has made such great progress in all domains, we take advantage of all measures which may facilitate the study of morbid conditions. The rich material of can Bergmann's clinic, which has been placed at my disposal, renders it possible to give plastic representations of all surgical dis eases which are suitable for reproduction in this way. The models were executed with the greatest skill by F. Kolbow in the pathoplastic institute at Berlin, and have proved of much value in the teaching of clinical surgery. The models have been reproduced by the four color process, which gives a more natural appear ance than can be obtained in reproduction by water colors. Excerpt from A Manual of Surgical Diagnosis This little book is intended mainly for dressers and junior practitioners, and is the outcome of more than twenty years of practical experience in the teaching of clinical surgery. Surgical diagnosis is so vast a subject, and so closely connected with pathology and other branches of surgery and medicine, that it is difficult to write of it as a separate entity. It is a subject with no beginning and no end, so intricate and far reaching are the questions involved in surgical diagnosis. It is hoped, however, that a book which does not attempt to deal fully with every detail of surgical diagnosis, but concerns itself rather with the principles involved and with the methods of examination that ought to be adopted in individual cases, may serve a useful purpose.
