Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Surgery: Delivered at Hotel Dieu, in 1832 Any one who attends M. Dupuytren's courses, must be astonished at the extreme value of his practical remarks, which cannot but be received with great deference, when we con sider that they are the gleanings of twenty-five years of a full practice, to say nothing of his rare opportunities. The wars of Napoleon, the glorious three days of 1830, and. The civil com motions which agitated Paris in 1832, are a few of the uncommon facilities for professional improvement which he has enjoyed, and of which he has amply availed himself. Excerpt from Lectures on Principles of Surgery Many valuable books have been published on Principles of Surgery, but some are now out of date, some give undue promi ncnoc to the writers' personal views, some are incomplete as to the subjects discussed, and some are so exhaustive as to be useful only for reference. The author does not expect the present modest volume to be free from criticism. It is simply a series of lectures based on standard authorities and is intended for the use of students and practitioners who desire the most recent views of surgical path ology and have not the time or opportunity to read more ambi tious works. Any merit the book possesses will be found in the order and system of arrangement and in the clearness and brevity of description. Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Abdominal Surgery and Other Subjects The volume comprises lectures on Abdominal Surgery, con taining the results of the author's vast experience in this depart ment; a paper on The Treatment of Gun-shot Wounds of the Small Intestines, based upon a series of experiments on dogs; it also contains short clinical lectures upon almost every subject in Surgery. From ten to twenty patients were present for treatment at each clinic, consequently only the important practical facts could be dwelt upon - the theoretical discussion being reserved for the three didactic lectures which the author delivered each week. In order to illustrate the amount of work which had to be per formed during one session, the stenographic report of one entire clinic has been added as an appendix. Most of the cases considered were referred to the clinic by alumni of the college. Their initials and addresses have been preserved for the purpose of identification. Excerpt from Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Surgery IT may be considered by many that a book upon Surgery is not at the present time one of the desiderata of the medical profession; and such a remark would, I think, be quite true, if it were intended to apply to a work on the abstract principles of the science. It is not without mature consideration that I have determined upon publishing the present vol. Ume; but I have come to the conclusion, that as its contents are of a practical character, embodying the experience of twenty-five years, dur ing which time I have occupied the position of surgeon to Guy's Hos pita], it would be found useful, not only to the student, but also to those who have entered upon the practice of their profession. It must be borne in mind, that it has not been my intention to write a systematic work on the elements of the science of surgery. These lectures were originally delivered before my hospital pupils; and in thus presenting them to the profession in a collected form, my object has been to furnish a useful compendium of surgery, in which the student may meet with a clear account of the practice of that science, established, not only on my own experience, but likewise upon the best acknowledged authorities. That the practice may not bear in some cases the character of empiricism, I have endeavoured, so far as I have been able to lay down the general principles of science upon which the practice is based at the same time I have avoided as much as possible any discussion of the hypotheses of the time, deeming my practical book an unfit medium for such matter. Excerpt from Lectures on Practical Surgery Before the Toland College was transferred by the Trus tees to the Regents of the University of California, and thereby became the medical department of that Institution, the students requested me to write a text-book; I told them that my engagements were so numerous that I could not find time to write a book with the scientific accuracy of some that had been published, but that if they were willing, 'i would talk a book that would contain the principles of Surgery, with illustrations from my own experience. Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Surgery: Delivered at the Hospital of La Charité The lectures of which these are a part were delivered by Professor Gosselin during the first five years following his advancement to the position occupied so long by Velpeau. The surgical service of La Charité, which for more than two hundred years has been connected with medical instruction at Paris, now belongs to the ranking chair of Clinical Surgery in the Ecole de Médecine, and a position in one of its three wards is the prize awarded each year to the student who passes the best examination for the internat. Professor Gosselin himself, after having risen through all the subordinate positions, and having gained each promotion by a competitive examination, stands now, since the death of Velpeau, at the head of the surgical section of the Faculty.
