Adhesive arachnoiditis is a spinal canal inflammatory disease in which cauda equina nerve roots are adhered or "glued" by adhesions to the arachnoid membrane of the spinal canal covering. It is associated with intractable pain, severe neurologic impairments, and premature death. Although considered a rare disease in the past, in this century it is re-emerging due to multiple factors. In the 18th and 19th centuries adhesive arachnoiditis was caused by the infections, syphilis, and tuberculosis, and later by insoluble dyes used in spine radiograph. Today this disease is primarily caused by herniated intervertebral discs, autoimmune-collagen disorders, and genetic connective tissue diseases. Advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) now permit a definitive diagnosis to be made of the disease. It is staged or categorized as mild, moderate, severe, and catastrophic. This handbook is a ready reference for medical practitioners to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of adhesive arachnoiditis. Included in the handbook are symptom profiles, laboratory tests, physical findings, and MRI abnormalities to identify and diagnose patients who have the disease. Treatment protocols are presented which contain nutritional, physiologic, and pharmacologic recommendations to assist medical practitioners in the care of patients with this tragic disease.

During Dr.Tennant's 40 plus years of clinical practice, he diagnosed and treated some of the rarest, medically complex conditions that generate severe intractable pain. He took on the challenge of treating patients with adhesive arachnoiditis that had failed standard treatments that no other doctors would treat. A tireless researcher, he discovered effective treatments and protocols brought forth from his long experience as a practicing physician, along with deep caring and compassion for those who are truly suffering. Dr.Tennant takes his Hippocratic Oath seriously! Learning much from his patients with adhesive arachnoiditis, he has often said that they are his greatest teachers. He and his colleagues, fellow arachnoiditis sufferers themselves, attempt to shed light and hope on this formerly incurable, devasting disease. It is their hope that this book provides a touchstone and guide for adhesive arachnoiditis patients and their families worldwide. This book is a direct result of the many years of Dr.Tennant's clinical experience as a practicing physician, and his success in treating and improving patient's health and quality of life in spite of a devasting diagnosis. His colleague's insights and experience of living with adhesive arachnoiditis, traversing the often-frustrating journey of trying to get a diagnosis, and receive effective treatment were difficult. This book will help those who suspect they may have adhesive arachnoiditis get a swift and proper diagnosis, and avoid delay in effective treatment. Tips to treat and prevent adhesive arachnoiditis are clearly outlined in this book. Treatment of adhesive arachnoiditis brings enhanced health, quality of life and joy to the years in spite of having a devastating disease. It is our sincere hope that the prevention tips outlined in this book will be heeded so that future cases of arachnoiditis will be drastically reduced. There is hope and help!

On 22 May 2012 the Committee resolved to investigate the issue of adhesive arachnoiditis further.6 To assist the Committee to determine the nature and scope of its investigations it initially received a private briefing on 14 August 2012 from a clinical neurologist and a representative of the Therapeutic Goods Administration. On the basis of information from that briefing the Committee undertook to focus on the aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of adhesive arachnoiditis."--P. 3.

This book contains anatomical and technical information on aspects of endoscopy of the lumbar subarachnoid space, which was named thecaloscopy. For a surgeon it is important to equip all the knowledge and technological advantages for making diagnosis and treatment of patients. Minimally invasive spinal surgery has been well developed in the last few decades. This book suggests the use of flexible endoscopes to approach the content of the thecal sac in order to scrutinise and cure pathological conditions that originate from this anatomical region and cannot be diagnosed by other means.

This book is designed to be an overview of spinal anatomy and pathology as well as a perusal of examination, diagnosis, and treatment techniques. Although it is a new work, it uses information published previously in Europe. The purpose is to provide an overview of spinal orthopedic medicine emphasizing manual treatment techniques. With the enormity of spinal pathology seen in physical therapy, additions to spinal assessment and treatment techniques are most worthy objectives. The authors successfully add valuable information to a field already served by a plethora of literature. The authors have directed their effort toward any clinician who encounters or will encounter people with pain from their temporomandibular joint to their sacrum. The information is diverse, specific, and technical enough to be useful to any level or practitioner. This book has numerous pertinent illustrations. They include anatomical and biomechanical drawings, CT and radiographic pictures, as well as cadaver and model photographs to demonstrate every aspect of the author's diverse subject. There are adequate numbers of references to complement the illustrations. Although the references are sometimes dated from the first half of this century, the authors have added chapters on specific research. Besides an adequate table of contents and index, this book provides separate, thorough tables of contents before each chapter. Additionally, there are seven extra chapters dealing with topics from prevention to exercise to the use of modalities. There are also four appendixes that help to consolidate diagnosis and treatment. This work is a meticulously thorough study of problems of the entire spinal cord.Although there is an emphasis on manual treatment techniques, other treatment strategies are adequately discussed. Additionally, the authors have thoroughly reviewed the underlying biomechanical causes for the back pain that is so pervasive in the orthopedic patient population.

Finally, a book takes the mystery out of diagnosing lumbar-sacral adhesive arachnoiditis (AA) with contrast MRI once and for all. Forest Tennant has read hundreds of contrast MRI's through his many years of medical practice, and in his recent research efforts. He has found that the earlier diagnosis is made, and treatment is started, the better the prognosis for the patient. AA is no longer a rare disease and is presenting in every community due to the rise in protruding and herniated discs, and the treatments that are commonplace to treat them. "Failed Back Syndrome" and "Low Back Pain" can be undiagnosed AA, and much can be done to treat it. An essential read all health care practitioners who are interested in treating patients with spine disorders, and patients who suspect they may have AA. Presented in a clear and easy to read format as a "how to" guide for reading contrast MRI's for the diagnosis of AA, it is filled with clearly diagramed MRI images of documented cases of AA. This book should help any interested health care practitioner clearly diagnose AA and learn the difference between AA and other spine disorders with similar symptoms. This book will help those who suspect they may have AA receive a quick and proper diagnosis, thus preventing delays in effective treatment of this devastating spinal cord disease. The sooner AA can be diagnosed, and treated, the better the over-all prognosis is. AA is no longer a rare disease. It is in every community, and community health care practitioners can learn how to diagnose and treat it. There is hope and help!
