Excerpt from Clement Lorimer, or the Book With the Iron Clasps: A Romance ON the night between the 30th of April and the lst of May, 1610, the moon shone brightly on the town of Antwerp. It lighted up the wide panorama of fertile level land Which stretches round that ancient city; it gleamed upon the broad Scheldt and the white sails-which here and there glided upon its waters; it lit up the Gothic spires and chiselled architraves Of many churches; and it brought into relief against the clear sky the thousand high quaint gavels, with their lofty peaks and rickety-looking projections of carved stone and wood, and little Gothic turrets and pinnacles, which are such striking features in all the Old Flemish towns. Our story leads us to the large open place in which the ca thedral of Antwerp stands. Few people were about, for the deep tones of the bell, swinging far up in that most marvel lously beautiful of spires, had sounded eleven, and the scat tered lights, gleaming from high windows, were disappearing one by one, so that when the chimes from the steeple pro claimed that the night had waned another quarter of an hour, but two were left, and they shone from houses which faced each other.
