Our story leads us to the large open place in which the ca thedral of Antwerp stands. Few people were about, for the deep tones of the bell, swinging far up in that most marvel lously beautiful of spires, had sounded eleven, and the scat tered lights, gleaming from high windows, were disappearing one by one, so that when the chimes from the steeple pro claimed that the night had waned another quarter of an hour, but two were left, and they shone from houses which faced each other.
