45 New Arrangments for Classical Guitar Players in Open D Tuning The classical guitar book in open D guitar tuning presents a new, and I think, additional way of approaching classical guitar repertoire. Tuning to an open chord, in this case, DADF#AD can have its benefits. The most obvious is that a major chord can be played with a single finger, or in the key of D, with open strings. Every attempt has been made to keep true to the original manuscripts, but occasionally the tune is transposed from the original, or the odd note has been altered to make the pieces playable. I have kept the arrangements primarily in the keys of D, G or A to take full advantage of the open strings in D tuning. In short, this book may not be for the classical guitar purist but does expand the repertoire that is lacking with open tunings. There is a good selection of graded pieces from prominent classical guitar composers like Aguado, Sor, Giuliani, Carcassi and Carulli, plus other well-known works by Bach, Dowland, Satie, Beethoven, de Visee, Diabelli, Grieg, Haydn, O’Carolan, Pachelbel, Paganini, Petzold, Sanz, Schumann and Vivaldi. I also adapted 24 of the Giuliani right-hand exercises, major and minor scales and arpeggios, plus fretboard charts to further develop your knowledge and technique in Open D. Each piece has notation, tablature in Open D tuning, right- and left-hand fingerings, and performance markings. An assortment of reference audio tracks are available online at the authors' website. For years, classical guitarists have enjoyed playing the lute music of the English composer, John Dowland (1563-1626). Forty of his beautiful compositions are included in this volume. the book is intended for the guitarist with intermediate to advanced fingerstyle technique, and can be played on both nylon and steel string instruments. In order to help capture the unique character of Dowland's music, renaissance lute tuning (capo on the third fret with the G string tuned to F sharp) is used throughout. the pieces progress more or less in order of increasing difficulty, and special care has been taken to be sure any group of consecutive pieces can be played with satisfying results. Standard notation only. Includes FREE downloadable companion audio files.

The guitar's entrance into American culture began in the early 1800s, introduced primarily by visiting and immigrant Spanish guitarists. Many of these newly arrived Spaniards exerted great influence on the guitar's development in 19th century America. the works in this book contain the compositions and arrangements of eight noted 19th century Hispanic American guitarist/composers with an emphasis on their works that reflect Latin themes or rhythms. Rounding out this anthology are dance forms such as the Habanera, Jota, Cachucha, Sevillaño, Spanish Mazurka, and other Spanish dance related works along with extended concert pieces such as Theme and Variations, Serenades, Polonaises and a delightful arrangement of the Celebrated Spanish Retreat, a programmatic work with an unusual "C" tuning and novel harmonic effects crafted to imitate the bugles, horns and drums as heard on the battlefield. the book features twenty-one solos and two duets which range in difficulty from easy to advanced. an extensive and well researched text along with photos and a companion recording by acclaimed guitarist/scholar Douglas Back help to make this a landmark book.
