This is the story of the author's apprenticeships with Japanese masters to build five unique and endangered traditional boats. It is part ethnography, part instruction, and part the personal story of a wooden boatbuilder fueled by a passion to preserve a craft tradition on the brink of extinction. Over the course of 17 trips to Japan, Douglas Brooks traveled over 30,000 miles to seek out and interview Japan's elderly master boatbuilders; he built boats with five of them, all in their seventies and eighties, between 1996 and 2010. For most of them, Brooks was their sole and last apprentice. Part I introduces significant aspects of traditional Japanese boatbuilding: design, workshop and tools, wood and materials, joinery and fastenings, propulsion, ceremonies, and the apprenticeship system. Part II details each of his five apprenticeships, concluding with a poignant chapter on Japan's sole remaining traditional shipwright. This fascinating book fills a large and long-standing gap in the literature on Japanese crafts, and will be of interest to boatbuilders, woodworkers, and all those impressed with the marvels of Japanese design and workmanship.

Garden's career as both a yacht designer and builder spanned well over six decades and untold hundreds of boats sailing canoes, salmon trollers, tugboats, cruising ketches, gaff-rigged cutters with plumb stems, easily built pocket cruisers, racers, luxury yachts, trading schooners, pulling boats, classic power launches, production fiberglass cruisers and patrol boats. Such a great variety of boats each given his special touch. Garden's writing style is just as far-ranging and eclectic as his boats, whimsical and informative, light-hearted yet solidly grounded, serious, thought-provoking and thoroughly engaging. In short, as good as his drawings. The original edition of Yacht Designs was published in 1977 and, after several printings, had gone completely out of print. In his moreorless retirement, Bill Garden had time to write more of the essays on his own designs that made him a popular feature of The Rudder magazine. He revised and expanded the essays from the original edition and added over 30 more boats, many never before published, and even a few dream ships that were never built, all combined and brought together in this volume. Each essay is as different as the boat it describes, sometimes explaining the building process or a particular aspect of it in detail, or the events that led to a design, or the individuals involved, or the evolution of a yacht type, or Bill's own unique outlook on life and the boats he loved. So pick a boat and climb aboard, or just start at the beginning and go on to the end. You might just find your own dream ship in these pages. See why Bill Garden has been an inspiration to succeeding generations of yacht designers! We can only thank God for his talent and generosity in encouraging and mentoring us, and his hospitality at his island office.

“Time did not exist; or if it did it did not mater. Our world then was both wide and narrow—wide in the immensity of the sea and mountain; narrow in that the boat was very small, and we lived and camped, explored and swam in a little realm of our own making...” This is the fascinating true adventure story of a woman who packed her five children onto a twenty-five-foot boat and explored the coastal waters of British Columbia summer after summer in the 1920s and 1930s. Acting single-handedly as skipper, navigator, engineer and of course, mother, Muriel Wylie Blanchet saw her crew through exciting—and sometimes perilous—encounters with fog; rough seas, cougars, bears and whales, and did so with high spirits and courage. On these pages an independent woman with a deep respect for the native cultures of a region, and a refreshing wonderment about the natural world, comes to life. In The Curve of Time, she has left us with a sensitive and lyrically written account of their journeys and a timeless travel memoir not to be missed.
