Approximately 230,000 cubic yards of sediments will be dredged annually for the next 3-5 years until the area la filled. Once the site is filled, no further dredging will be done until another suitable disposal site is found and an environmental ' impact statement is prepared on the confined disposal site discharge location. This material has been classified as polluted and will be placed in a confined disposal facility to prevent the re-entry of contaminants into the aquatic system. The matetial is removed from a navigation channel and turning basin that ib approximately 5.5 miles in length; extending from the 21-foot water depth in Lake Erie to a point about 1.6 miles upstream of the mouth of the River Raisin. The disposal site is a AO acre diked area owned by the Detroit Edison Power Company located at the mouth of the River Raisin. 3. The proposed project is to perform maintenance dredging of the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay Federal Navigation channels. Dredging will be performed by a Government-owned hopper dredge. Approximately 140,000 cubic yards of polluted material dredged from the river, from the Detroit and Mackinac Railroad Bridge to the upper limits of the harbor, is placed on the confined disposal area on Middle Ground Island. The polluted channel section from the D & M R.R. bridge to the river mouth and the section throughout the inner bay will not be dredged until a confined disposal site is constructed to contain this dredged material. The average annual volume of shoaling throughout the project is approximately 840,000 cubic yards. (Author).
