A prehistoric tribe of wild cats learns the power of fire in this “page-turner full of suspense and action” from the PEN Award–winning author (Booklist). With her mastery over fire—known as “the Red Tongue”—Ratha now leads the Named, a clan of sentient, prehistoric big cats with their own language, traditions, and law. But her control becomes threatened with the arrival of an outsider. An Un-Named stranger with orange eyes arrives, bringing political savvy and a desire to use “the Red Tongue” for his own purposes. As the clan begins to worship the Red Tongue, they see their territory expand, but at what cost? The Red Tongue is an unthinking master of great force, able to destroy those who fail to reign in its power. Ratha may have the solution, but does she truly desire the responsibility of ruling her clan and the Red Tongue? Do the Named have a future without her? Author Clare Bell returns with Clan Ground, the second book of the Named series. Readers who fell in love with the noble cats and suspense of the first book will love this captivating tale that grabs you from the very first page.

When Ratha admits an Un-Named stranger to the clan, he brings a change as great as Ratha's taming of fire. Does the orange-eyed newcomer understand the power of Ratha's fire-creature-and the hearts of her people-better than she does? Worship and control of fire may strengthen the Named and expand their domain, yet subjugation to the Red Tongue's tyranny threatens to diminish them. The herding teacher, Thakur, offers a gentler alternative, but dare Ratha try it? Her choice will determine the future of the clan-and her own place in it. Clan Ground is the Second Book of the Named.

One brave feline, exiled from her clan, must fight to survive in this PEN Award–winning author’s epic fantasy adventure about a tribe of prehistoric cats. Twenty-five million years in the past, a clan of sentient, prehistoric big cats called “the Named” have their own language, traditions, and law. Led by Meoran, the Named herd horses and deer for food. They keep order and peace, fending off predatory raiders—the UnNamed—from all sides. But, the battle has taken its toll, and the Named are skirting the edge of survival. Much to the displeasure of Meoran, a young female named Ratha discovers a powerful defense against the UnNamed. She calls it “the Red Tongue,” and it is a creature of incredible power. Red Tongue is fire, a force of both life and destruction that must be at once nurtured and tamed. Sensing that Ratha’s mastery of fire threatens his power, Meoran banishes her from the clan. As she travels out amongst the savage UnNamed, Ratha learns about both them and herself. But, her tribe needs her. Can she return? Will the Named survive constant attacks without the Red Tongue? Will the power of the Red Tongue change the clan forever? Acclaimed author Clare Bell crafts a serious coming-of-age story filled with adventure, triumph, and heartbreak. Perfect for readers of Jean M. Auel’s The Clan of the Cave Bear, Ratha’s Creature will have readers hooked and clamoring for more stories of these big, noble cats.

Clan, King and Covenant explores the turbulent history of the Highlands during the seventeenth century. The signing of the National Covenant in 1638 first challenged the powers of Charles I in Scotland, but it was only when Alisdair MacDonald joined Montrose in raising the Royalist clans that the country erupted into civil war. Central to the conflict was the ancient enmity between the MacDonalds and the Campbells, Earls of Argyll, as clan Donald attempted to reclaim their ancestral lands in Argyll. There followed a whirlwind year of spectacular victories for Montrose in the name of the King as the Highland clans emerged upon the national stage, before his campaign subsided into eventual defeat. However it was only after the Restoration of Charles II that a bitter and protracted struggle broke out between Church and Crown, after Bishops were reappointed to the national Church. Political and religious tensions mounted with the acession of James VII of Scotland (James II of England) as a Catholic king ruling over a predominantly Presbyterian people. It reached a climax in the outbreak of the Highland War, when Viscount Dundee won a devastating victory at Killiecrankie on behalf of James VII over the Presbyterian forces of Lowland Scotland, but at the cost of his own life. Subsequently the Crown imposed an uneasy peace upon the Highlands, after the cold-blooded plotting of 'murder under trust' culminated in the Glencoe Massacre. Condoned by William of Orange, few events in the blood-stained history of the Highland clans have quite the dreadful resonance of this act, carried out cynically as a matter of public policy. Also available by the same author: Lost Kingdoms and Feuds, Forays and Rebellions (both Edinburgh University Press)
