Identity and diversity in all its forms present major challenges to countries seeking to best equip citizens with the skills to participate effectively in their diverse societies. This investigation into citizenship education in Trinidad and Tobago produced information about: the type, nature, and variety of programs being offered; the topics covered in these programs; the approaches and methodologies being used; and the groups that participate in the programs. It also highlighted the fact that government and civil society organizations are involved in citizenship education. Additionally, the investigation provided opportunities for individuals and organizations to identify the challenges of being a citizen in the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-religious society of Trinidad and Tobago. Participation in the search conference which collected information for the study, provided opportunities for individuals and organizations to share concerns about their work. Primary data were collected in a questionnaire given to organizations in the sample, in meetings, and in face-to-face and telephone interviews. Among the concerns and issues identified and discussed were: values, identity, difference and diversity, inequalities; citizenship and the good citizen; democracy and governance; the socio-economic situation and its impact on citizens; the ideology and structure of the education system; and the content, delivery evaluation and impact of citizenship education programs. A list of participants at the Search Conference is appended. (BT).

Download The Handbook on Caribbean Education Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book brings together leading scholars of Caribbean education from around the world. Schooling continues to hold a special place both as a means to achieve social mobility and as a mechanism for supporting the economy of Caribbean nations. In this book, the Caribbean includes the Greater and Lesser Antilles. The Greater Antilles is made up of the five larger islands (and six countries) of the northern Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. The Lesser Antilles includes the Windward and Leeward Islands which are inclusive of Barbados, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago along with several other islands. Each chapter provides a unique perspective on the various social and cultural issues that define Caribbean education and schooling. The Handbook on Caribbean Education fills a void in the literature and documents the important research being done throughout the Caribbean. Creating a space where Caribbean voices are a part of “international” discussions about 21st century global matters and concerns is an important contribution of this work.

Download Teacher Education Intersecting Comparative and International Education Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book draws critical connections between teacher education or preparation and the field of comparative and international education (CIE) showing ways in which the two fields can inform and advance one another. The chapters consider how teacher education shapes and is shaped by CIE, particularly in an era of socio-cultural upheavals, politico-economic transformations and climate or health crises affecting the human and natural world. The question at the core of the book is: in what ways can comparative and international education support a rethinking of teacher education in the wake of the social movements for equity, justice and civil liberties with ramifications for educators around the world? It includes contributions from leading academics based in Argentina, Canada, China, Columbia, Finland, Grenada, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Spain, South Africa, Turkey and the USA. The chapters cover topics ranging from equity, social justice, and the sustainable development goals to country case-studies including teacher education in Myanmar and a comparative study of teacher preparation in South Korea and the USA.
