Excerpt from Church Harmonies: A Collection of Hymns and Tunes for the Use of Congregations Fob many years there has been a growing desire in many congregations of the Universalist Church to participate more directly in the service of singing in the public worship. The present Collection of Hymns and Tunes has been made to meet this desire; and the compilers believe they have succeeded in producing a work which will meet the needs of our people. The tunes have been selected with reference to congregational singing only; and as there are hymns so closely associated with old tunes that they suggest one another, and could hardly be divorced, the compilers have not hesitated to insert a tune a number of times, when it seemed best adapted to give expression to the hymns. It is believed that this will be found a valuable and welcome feature of the work. The hymns are mainly those of the fine new collection known among us as the Portland Collection, when published without a liturgy, and as Prayers and Hymns, when published with a liturgy. To make each page complete, it has been found necessary to make an addition of nearly two hundred hymns, all of which add value to the book. Excerpt from The Christian Hymnal: A Choice Collection of Hymns and Tunes for Congregational and Social Worship In the compilation of the christian hymnal, the Trustees beg leave to say that, while they have had an eye to a just economy, they have, at the Same time, spared no means to make the book as perfect as possible. To this end, they have not only secured the best copyrighted music now in use, but have also had written expressly for this work a number of new tunes by some of the most talented and popular composers in this country. Such names as Dr. Thomas Hastings, T. J. Cook, John Zundel, T. E. Perkins, Silas J. Vail; Philip Phillips, W. H. Doane, Solon Wilder, A. Squire, etc., need only be mentioned to assure the superior character of the new music introduced. These men have all been in constant correspondence with the Editing Com mittee in Cincinnati, and have rendered valuable assistance in the preparation of the work. Thanks are especially due to Mr. W. H. Doane, of this city, for suggestions in reference to the general plan and style Of the book, as well as for his admirable contributions to it. The Editing Committee have kept constantly in view the importance or meeting the wants of all classes in our churches; hence they have attempted to bring the Old and New together in such a dress, and in such relations to each other, as that there shall be no incompatibility between them. The old standard tunes that have stood the test of long use will be found always to occupy the first place, while many familiar pieces, that are especially valuable because of endearing associations, have been harmonized expressly for this work by the best harmonists in the United States. These, with all other new arrangements, are marked with a star thus: - and should not be used in other works without permission. The same caution should be observed in reference to all music marked (new), such pieces having been written ex pressly for the christian hymnal. The hymns, with a few exceptions, have been selected from the Christian Hymn Book, and embrace every variety of meter in that book. An index has been arranged, in which all the omitted hymns of the Christian Hymn Book are referred to pages in this book where suitable tunes may be found. Hence a complete adaptation to the entire Hymn Book is provided for, and this, of itself, renders the hymnal invaluable, as it contains 'a larger variety of metrical music than any other book now published. Excerpt from The Church Hymnary: A Collection of Hymns and Tunes for Public Worship Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs in which we do homage to our blessed Lord remind us of our mercies and enkindle us to love and gratitude and joy. By raising the character of the service of praise in our churches, we present a more joyous type of Christianity, and attract the world, especially the young, within hearing distance of the Gospel. The editors of this book have endeavored to preserve the best and the dearest of the old hymns and tunes - music the church does not willingly let die, hymns rich in doctrine and suggestive of holy childhood memories. The congregation has rights which the minister is bound to respect, and one of them is, that there should be given out at each service one hymn at least which is familiar to all. But it will not do to keep singing over and over a few old hymns; there should be at least one new hymn at each service. Hence we have embraced in this collection many modem tunes in which the melody is so clear and sweet as to catch the popular ear, while at the same time we have taken pains to omit the cheap and sensational airs which are sure in the end to weary and repel people of good taste. Recognizing, also, the wide-spread musical culture that characterizes our time, and the consequent demand in our churches for a higher and more classical order of music, we have introduced many new adaptations from the great German and Italian composers, and following in the direction of the old Laudes Domini, we have amply availed ourselves of the modern English school with its rich and varied harmonies. We have striven to make the book comprehensive, so as to meet and to educate the popular taste, and at the same time to satisfy the most cultivated and fastidious of musical critics. We hope that "The New Laudes Domini" may help the people of God to attain that which should be the final goal and product of all musical effort in our churches, good congregational singing - praise which will not only be acceptable to our Lord, but, as Milton says, will have Power to mitigate and suage With solemn touches troubled thoughts, and chase Anguish, and doubt, and fear, and sorrow, and pain From mortal or immortal minds. It must be a matter of honest pride to the Baptists on both sides of the sea to discover, what has become more and more evident to us, as we have gone forward in making our selections, namely, that a large and most honorable part of the whole hymnology of the Christian church has proceeded from Baptist authors.
