A CBA Bestseller -- Two thousand years ago, twelve people changed the world. Stearns believes it can happen again. It's 1998 and Richard Stearns' heart is breaking as he sits in a mud hut and listens to the story Rakai, Uganda. His journey to this place took more than a long flight from the United States to Africa. It took answering God's call on his life, a call that hurtled him out of the presidential corner office at Lenox -- America's finest tableware company -- to this humble corner of Uganda. This is a story of how a corporate CEO faced his own struggle to obey God whatever the cost, and his passionate call for Christians to change the world by actively living out their faith.Richard Stearns has served as President of World Vision U.S. since 1998, having formerly been the CEO of Parker Bros. Games and Lenox, Inc. He and his wife, Renee, have five children of their own and millions more around the world.

"Jesus's words 'the poor you will always have with you' (Matthew 26:11) are regularly used to suggest that ending poverty is impossible. In this book Liz Theoharis critically examines both the biblical text and the lived reality of the poor to show how this passage is taken out of context and distorted. Poverty is not inevitable, Theoharis argues. It is a systemic sin, and all Christians have a responsibility to partner with the poor to end poverty once and for all"--Jacket

Founded in 1088 by St Bruno at the Grande Chartreuse in France, the Carthusians came to Britain almost a hundred years later. Only nine permanent monasteries were established before the Reformation, and six of these were founded after the Black Death nearly 200 years later.Yet their influence far exceeded their numbers. They were exceptionally well regarded in the later Middle Ages, providing a late flowering of British monasticism when other religious orders were in decline. Supported by the highest levels of society, the Carthusians are remarkably well documented, and we can see how their life was sustained by agricultural estates, bequests from the local laity, and the income from burials and masses. It was they who particularly stood up to Henry VIII, and three of their nine priors were butchered for their beliefs.

The apartment door closed behind them with a thud. Floss tugged at the elastic band on her sailor hat. Estelle gave a hitch to her garter belt and took her sister's hand. Come on, Flossie. Daddy's waiting. Hold tight to the bannister. They walked slowly down the stairs, two hostages crossing the no man's land between their mother's world and their father's. Floss was five years old. Her hair was still baby-blond and her cheeks were as round and smooth as apples. Estelle had just turned nine. Small for her age, skinny, knobby-kneed, wary, she sighed as she pushed the street door open, thinking of the long day ahead of her. Their father didn't smile at them. His handsome face under the pearl gray fedora seemed always to be scowling. Estelle read his expression as disapproval, unable to imagine that this weekly ritual could be humiliating for him, too

This manuscript will hopefully motivate you to do a serious self-examination of yourself to see if you are lacking in one of these qualities as well. If we are going to be leaders in this twenty-first century, we need to lead by example. Let us lead with determination, act with integrity, pursue encouragement, and practice temperance on a daily basis. To God be the glory.

When the rich young ruler asked Jesus how he could obtain eternal life, Jesus told him to sell everything and give it to the poor. He went away sorrowing because he had great possessions. What if someone who was really rich actually did sell everything he owned and gave the money to the poor? Would he know how to survive without money? How would people treat him? Would he try to get a job? There are many possible outcomes. This book explores one of them. Along the way, the man encounters several interesting people who teach him important lessons including humility. In the end, he comes to a greater understanding of why Jesus told the ruler to sell everything and give the money to the poor. It wasn't about money at all. The Bible is clear in teaching that eternal life is only obtained by faith in Jesus Christ. Why then did Jesus tell the man to do what He did? Read, and you will learn.
