Perhaps the less formal nature of the Studies will adapt them better to the needs of those whom technical works on theology might repel. The treatment makes no pretence at exhaustiveness, but probably it will be found that few points of real importance in theological study are left untouched. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God The work that was entrusted to me by the General Editors of the International Theological Library was simply the presentation of the conception of God that is characteristic of the Christian religion. I was not sent to search for God, but rather to report as well as I might what the Christian faith testifies concerning him. It has seemed to me that this single commission was enough for me to undertake, and I have attempted nothing more. No report of the literature of the subject will be found upon these pages, nor any quotation of other men's work, nor any controversy. It is the sole endeavour of the book to set forth the Christian doctrine of God for the present day: not the doctrine of the past, or of the future, but the thought of God that we may now entertain if we follow the leading of Jesus Christ the revealer. So far as I have the power, I have sought to be faithful both to the ancient light to the modern, and I have hoped that my presentation might bear reasonably well the tests of the present time. There are many ways of dealing with the vast and glorious theme, and certainly there must be room for a book that simply aims to show forth doctrine as Christian faith may receive it now. I have written in the full conviction that the light which Jesus Christ gives us upon God is the true light, and that God is such a Being as he inspires us to love and trust. Excerpt from History of Christian Doctrine Several years have elapsed since I engaged to prepare this work. The unexpected delay in its publication is owing chiefly to the pressure of other and more imperative engagements. One reason for it, however, is the fact that, although the subject is one which I had long studied and on which I had given instruction to many successive classes, more time was required for the compo sition of the book than I had anticipated. This is partly for the reason that it appeared to me, for the present purpose, expedient to abandon for the most part the method which I had always fol lowed in my Lectures of arranging the matter under the heads of General and Special Doctrinal History. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various Opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend them selves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find some thing in the book by which they may be interested or instructed.
