Excerpt from I Find My Vocation This book is prepared as a textbook for a high-school course on Choosing a Vocation. In many schools such a course is given under the name of Occupations, Vocational Guidance or Careers. In other schools it constitutes a unit in a larger course entitled Civics or Citizenship. In either case this book contains the materials which teachers need, covering as it does the problems to be faced and the steps to be taken in obtaining a satisfactory status in the occupational world. Excerpt from Choosing a Vocation The manuscript of this book was practically ready for publication when Professor Parsons died. For a year prior to his death he had given a large part of his time to Vocation Bureau work. Some of the material here used appeared in articles in The Arena, and a number of the "cases" in Part III have been published in the daily papers of Boston and New York. The appearance of these articles brought hundreds of letters of inquiry from all parts of the United States, expressing interest in the effort to give scientific vocational counsel to the young. That Professor Parsons would have carried the plan to a greater completeness had he lived, there is no doubt; but the work that he did do is of such value that it is believed many will be grateful to get such information about it as can be given in this volume. Whatever doubts there may be of the practicability of giving expert vocational counsel to young men and women, there are certain simple truths upon which the plan is based, and which I believe no one will deny. 1. It is better to choose a vocation than merely to "hunt a job." 2. No one should choose a vocation without careful self-analysis, thorough, honest, and under guidance. 3. The youth should have a large survey of the field of vocations, and not simply drop into the convenient or accidental position. Excerpt from Choice of Vocation: A Selected List of Books and Magazine Articles for the Guidance of Students This bibliography has been compiled by the Reference Department of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh at the request of the Department of Vocational Guidance of the Pittsburgh public schools. A tabulation of the first choice of occupations made by Pittsburgh high school pupils last year seemed to indicate, especially in the case of the girls, a need for a greater knowledge of the variety of careers open to them. Existing lists were either out of date, too brief, or not altogether adapted to the purpose. This bibliography is designed to furnish a list of books and magazine articles in which boys and girls may find reliable information presented in an interesting form. In compiling it all available lists have been consulted, especially the very full recent volume by Frederick J. Allen, "A Guide to the Study of Occupations." Since most of the books referred to give information about several occupations, repetition has been avoided by arranging the material in two sections. One gives an alphabetical list of occupations, indicating under each the books and magazines in which information may be found. The other lists alphabetically all the books referred to, with a descriptive note about each. Each magazine article treats of a single occupation and is therefore entered in full, with the descriptive note, under the occupation. The teacher or counselor who desires suggestions for making the best use of the material gathered together here, is referred to the abundant literature of vocational guidance. One of the best bibliographies on that subject is one compiled by J. M. Brewer and R. W. Kelly, under the title "A Selected Critical Bibliography of Vocational Guidance." Other useful books are Brewer's "Vocational Guidance Movement," Davis's "Vocational and Moral Guidance," and Bloomfield's "Youth, School and Vocation." Excerpt from Choosing a Lifework It will be observed that our discussions of these subjects are not comparative. There is no effort to place one vocation before any other, for individu als vary in tastes and in special mental qualifica tions. A right adjustment of industries to powers would put one person in one pursuit and another person in some other line of work, and we believe that if young men and women could have the broad field of life's activities laid out clearly before them, they could be greatly aided in determining the part they would individually best perform; fewer mis takes would be made, and success would more generally be achieved. The author of this book hopes by a survey of the trunk lines of human in dustry to assist in the selection of the occupation in which their personal interests may be most fully promoted and their obligations to others most com pletelv fulfilled. Excerpt from Getting Into Your Life-Work: A Guide to the Choice and Pursuit of a Vocation During the last decade a number of helpful books have been issued on vocational guidance, but no one of them nor all of them together fully meet the problem. This is no criticism on the books them selves, for the problem is too big and complex and changing to be solved in any one discussion; nor, if that were possible, would it long stay solved in these times of rapid flux in human affairs.
