Because of the tremendous growth of Chinese international students’ enrollment in American higher education and the rapid rise and development of Pathway programs in American universities, I determined the main purpose of this research was to determine the experiences of three Chinese international students in a Graduate Pathway program at a public four-year university in the Southeastern U.S. Three research questions were addressed:1. How do three Chinese international students describe their academic experiences in a Graduate Pathway program in the U.S.?2. How do these students describe differences in their learning experiences between the U.S. and China?3. How do these students describe their co-curricular experiences in a Graduate Pathway program in the U.S.?To better understand the experiences and challenges of international students, I conducted a qualitative exploratory study to examine the experiences of three Chinese international students, using narrative representations of those experiences.I collected data through in-depth interviews. I used reflexive thematic analysis to analyze the data. I identified eight broad themes in this study: accomplishment, resources, instructional style, ambitions, lifestyle, social interactions, institutional support, and culture shock. Across these themes, students’ stories revealed their thoughts, beliefs, comprehensions, and factors motivating them to face challenges. In my representation of their narratives, I intertwined my personal recollections as a Chinese international student, illustrating shared commonalities and differences. Leadership, faculty, and staff at universities and language training institutes must understand how Chinese international students experience academic learning and co-curricular experiences in the U.S., what challenges they face, and what supports are needed from universities and language training institutes for them to achieve academic success. The Chinese international students participating in this study recommended changes to the Graduate Pathway program: (a) improve academic training quality, (b) provide daily language training, and (c) promote student services support. Their recommendations informed the implications of the study both for improving practice in the Graduate Pathway program and for potential future research related to Undergraduate Pathway programs and increased online learning.

"Many students in China seek post-secondary educational opportunities in the UK because graduating from or even just attending a college or university there can facilitate upward social mobility and employability in China once they have returned there to live. However, these Chinese students face a number of challenges when they attend a university in the UK, ranging from culture shock and social isolation to academic difficulties encountered because of their problems with the English language. If not adequately addressed, these challenges can lead to poor academic performance and ultimately dropout. Pathway programs, bridging programs tailor-made for international students that aim to provide the students with the adequate supports they need to help them cope with their initial transition period and even through their integration into a university, began to be developed in the UK in the early 1990s. Today, more and more universities in the UK-even the most prestigious ones-offer pathway programs, and many are heavily dependent on pathway programs for their international student recruitment. Chinese students account for almost 50% of the pathway students in the UK, and the number promises to grow in the future. A better understanding of why and how pathway programs can be most useful to Chinese students, and what supports are most needed by the students who use them, can help more Chinese students succeed in the future. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the key factors that are relevant to the retention of Chinese students enrolled in pathway programs at a for-profit private college in the UK. While previous research has explored the academic adaptation or acculturation processes of Chinese students studying abroad, limited attention has been paid to students’ own perspectives and narrations of their experience. To contribute to a more nuanced understanding of this highly mobile group, this study takes a closer look at the students’ self-identity narratives. How do they make sense of their foreign adventure? How do they position themselves among their peers and their family members, as well as within the greater transnational context? Based on 29 in-depth, biographical interviews with Chinese students in the United States, the findings show the participants’ continuously interpreting and revising their individual, academic, and cultural identities. In the familial context, a recurring narrative of the high-potential only-child could be observed. Many students (and their family members) felt that their unique talents and personalities were not appreciated within the Chinese educational system and thus sought more holistic environments abroad.

The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of Chinese graduate students enrolled in music education master's and doctoral degree programs in the United States. Specifically, it explored participants' perceptions of (a) their educational experiences (past and present), (b) the challenges they faced, (c) their strategies for success, (d) the benefits they experienced as international graduate students in the United State, (e) the effect of this experience on their thinking, self-perception, and behavior, and (f) how they planned to move forward or move on following this experience. Participants were six native Chinese graduate students enrolled at the time of data collection in master's and doctoral level music education degree programs within U.S. higher education institutions, including myself as participant-observer. Data included interview transcriptions, online discussion forum posts, personal statements from participants' graduate school applications, and research notes. Qualitative techniques were used to analyze data and identify emergent themes and meta-themes, which were then used to address research questions and draw conclusions. From the results, models were generated of (a) Chinese music education graduate students' experience in the United States. and (b) the three-stage cross-cultural adaptation process of Chinese music education graduate students in the United States. In a broad sense, this study will contribute to the growing body of literature on international students in U.S. higher education institutions. More specifically, results could help to provide understanding and insight into the experiences of Chinese students enrolled in graduate level music education master's and doctoral degree programs in the United States. and may illuminate considerations for how these experiences might be improved. Results could also help U.S. educators and music educators in higher education institutions to better understand Chinese music education graduate students' experiences at different stages and could provide new ideas concerning effective strategies for working with them.
