Excerpt from Childs' Catalogue of Fall Bulbs That Bloom, Plants, Seeds, Shrubs, Fruits, Etc: With a Treatise on the Culture of Bulbs, Indoors and Out No yard should be without an assortment of hardy bulbs. Even if it is but a few feet of breath ing space between the walls of brick, there is room for a few choice bulbs, if there is room for a flower bed at all. People forget that they get a double use of every foot of flower bed by having hardy spring bulbs as the first crop. These pop up while everything else is shivering, bloom gaily, and then ripen up their tops and die down again, the bulbs lying in the ground for the rest of the summer absolutely dormant, as unconcerned as so many stones. Thus the same space can be used again for summer flowers. The only pre caution necessary is not to use deep rooting plants or perennials in the same bed. Poppies, Petunias, Candytuft, Portulaca, Nasturtiums, Asters, Phlox Verbenas, etc will not interfere with the dor mant bulbs, and may be planted in the same bed even before the bulbs have ripened their foliage and died down. Excerpt from Childs' 1917 Rare Flowers, Vegetables and Fruits Plants grow two to three feet high, the blooms starting early with a central globular head which often reaches the immense size of two feet in circumference. Scores of branches are thrown out, each bearing a ball of scar let wool. All these branches support numerous laterals with small heads of bloom mixed with fresh green foliage so that a plant looks like an immense bouquet splendidly arranged and set in the ground. None of the blooms fade in any way until hit by frost, but all continue to ex pand and glow with a deepening richness of color, a deep crimson-scarlet. Flowers when cut in a fresh state and carefully dried retain their shape and brilliant color and are useful for winter decorating, like everlastings.
