The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness, first published in 1944, is considered one of the most profound and relevant works by the influential theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, and certainly the fullest statement of his political philosophy. Written and first read during the prolonged, tragic world war between totalitarian and democratic forces, Niebuhr’s book took up the timely question of how democracy as a political system could best be defended. Most proponents of democracy, Niebuhr claimed, were “children of light,” who had optimistic but naïve ideas about how society could be rid of evil and governed by enlightened reason. They needed, he believed, to absorb some of the wisdom and strength of the “children of darkness,” whose ruthless cynicism and corrupt, anti-democratic politics should otherwise be repudiated. He argued for a prudent, liberal understanding of human society that took the measure of every group’s self-interest and was chastened by a realistic understanding of the limits of power. It is in the foreword to this book that he wrote, “Man’s capacity for justice makes democracy possible; but man’s inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary.” This edition includes a new introduction by the theologian and Niebuhr scholar Gary Dorrien in which he elucidates the work’s significance and places it firmly into the arc of Niebuhr’s career.

Hi, I am J. R. This is the book everyone in the world should read. Now, here is your chance. Don't get left behind. Your life depends on it! I hope that you enjoy this short story. I hope I help you. This is a story no one knew about God, the Father of light, and the light he put in you, into the darkness of your soul. You must learn to control the darkness. It is hard for you, I know. The darkness that lives in you is very strong. In this book, I will tell you your purpose in life. My hope is you would seek out the light in you and become one of the children of the light (Father). He loves you all. He waited for you. Come all who are troubled and heavily labor. Yes, I know. Where did I learn of this story? Easy. I am living it . . . Right now, The Father of life is my teacher and yours, if you would only listen. Take care, my family. The next time I go out to fight the demon inside a soul, it may be yours. I am here for you now. The Son of the Father did not die on the cross; it was just the body of a man you saw that died. The Father is trying to tell you that this is the fate of man who chooses not to live in the light. Yes, one more thing . . . You must let me in to help you; then I will come to you. I know that it is a strange way to write a story about the Father of light, but I did not know of any other way to reach you to open your eyes. I hope that you learn the meaning of my story. J. R.

Rosa and her mama go to school together-in the dark of night, silently, afraid that any noise they hear is a patroller on the lookout for escaped slaves. Their school is literally a hole in the ground, where they and other slaves of all ages gather to form letters out of sticks, scratch letters in the dirt, and pronounce their sounds in whispers. Young Rosa is eager to learn the letters and then the words, because after the words comes reading. But she must have patience, her mama reminds her, and keep her letters to herself when she's working on the plantation. If the Master catches them, it'll mean a whipping-one lash for each letter. No matter how slow and dangerous the process might be, Rosa is determined to learn, and pass on her learning to others.

In 1874, an amazing event took place--the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) initiated the rescue of a severely abused child named Mary Ellen Wilson. Her rescue initiated the beginning of true child protection in this country, and eventually, the first child protection agency in America was formed.
