Excerpt from Child-Study, 1911, Vol. 4: The Journal of the Child-Study Society Life is a skill, an art like a handicraft, and true knowledge is a form of will. I have been asked to read a paper on the recreational activities of adolescent girls, and before commencing I must define the scope of my paper. I take it that what is expected of me is not a discourse on recreational activities in general, but on such recreational activities as involve chie y muscular movements, I am to exclude such activities as are primarily, or chie y, intellectual. But with regard to the other factor in my subject, adolescent girls, I propose to consider the young girl, whether she be the fortunate child of well-to-do parents, the elementary schoolgirl, or the poor little waif who has been mercifully brought into an institution, whether that institution be reformatory school, hospital, or even prison. Girls learn about "femininity" from childhood onwards, first through their relationships in the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector’s reports, this book studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late Victorian and early-Edwardian England. It traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to reinforce lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. Considering the social anxieties that helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920, the book goes on to focus on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century and finally, examines the relationship between feminism and girls’ education.
