Excerpt from Popular History of Utah It has fallen to my lot to prepare for publication three histories of Utah. The earliest and largest, consisting of four volumes, published in elegant and expensive style, had of necessity but a limited circulation. Nevertheless it may be found in many homes throughout the State, and upon the shelves of leading libraries in various parts of the land. The second history was written at the request of local educators, for use in the grammar grades of the public schools. Prepared in haste to meet an urgent demand, "The Making of a State" did not aim to give a complete presentation of the subject, though all salient points, social, political and industrial, were touched upon in its pages. Controversial matters were purposely omitted, for the sake of good feeling between "Mormon" and "Gentile" children attending those schools. The work now issued represents the realization of a desire to produce a history of Utah complete in a single volume, one that could be sold at such a figure as to place it within the reach of all. Moreover, it was my wish to make clearer certain points imperfectly presented in my first production. The period during which it was compiled - that of the anti-polygamy crusade - was one of strife and turmoil; books and documents had been confiscated or were scattered; and sources of information were not accessible nor so plentiful as they are at the present time. Consequently I labored at a great disadvantage. The difficulty of writing contemporaneous history, amid the heat and stress of happenings involved in the narrative, is one recognized by all intelligent minds. That I have experienced this difficulty, I admit. Never at any time, however, have I purposely misrepresented anybody or anything. I write from the "Mormon" viewpoint, but not as an Anti-"Gentile." I have none but friendly feelings toward all the people of Utah, regardless of sect, party, color, or creed. This is the story of my native State - a record of the facts as I behold them; and "with malice toward none," and "with charity for all," I send it forth upon its mission. Excerpt from The Founding of Utah Seventy-five years ago this spring, 1923, the colonists of Utah were clearing the land in the Salt Lake Valley and planting wheat, rye, corn, potatoes, buckwheat, beans, and squash. They had experienced a hard winter, for food was scarce and their clothing hardly enough to keep them warm. But the springtime brought sunshine, hope, and cheer. Everybody went on to the land and worked. Hundreds of immigrants were expected in the summer and autumn, and they would be in need of food. The work of colonizing the Great Basin by the Mormon pioneers had begun. They be gan the conquest of the soil, and, as they conquered, they loved the land more and more. The following account of the founding of Utah is intended to serve as an introduction to the later history of the State. The book, therefore, deals mainly with origins. It is a series of stories headed as chapters which give the principal eco nomic and social factors of our State's early history. The field of Western history has hardly been touched; and the same may be said of Utah history. Our State has passed through all the stages of economic and social life that are common to American civilization. The story of the develop ment of Utah is a story of the conquest of the soil andthe establishing of the institutions of American civilization in this part of the great West. Excerpt from History of Utah, 1540-1887 If the writer is fortunate enough to escape the many pitfalls of fallacy and illusion which beset his way; if he is wise and successful enough to find and follow the exact line of equity which should be drawn between the hotly contending factions; in a word, if he is honest and capable, and speaks honestly and openly in the treatment of such a subject, he is pretty sure to offend, and bring upon himself condemnation from all parties. But where there are palpable faults on both sides of a case, the judge who unites equity with due discrimination may be sure he is not in the main far from right if he succeeds in offending both sides. Therefore, amidst the multiformity of conflicting ideas and evidence, having abandoned all hope of satisfying others, I fall back upon the next most reasonable prop osition left - that of satisfying myself.
