A novel of unexpected passion from the author who “brings the West and her characters to life and gives her fans hours of true reading pleasure” (Romantic Times). Fort Reno, 1878. Glory Halstead faced her captor with the same pride and courage that had seen her through hardship and bitter scandal and vowed to be strong. She didn’t know what Two Arrows intended to do with her. But she knew her life had changed forever that fateful night she had witnessed three hundred Cheyenne fleeting captivity at Fort Reno. Two Arrows wanted vengeance—and he would get it by making another man’s woman his own. Yet as captain David Krueger of the U.S. cavalry rode hard and fast with his troops to recapture the woman he loved and the Cheyenne he hated, Glory was losing her heart to a man, a people, and a new life. Now as they made the brutal journey through the harsh, unforgiving wilderness, Glory and Two Arrows would discover passion as primal and unyielding as the land they were destined to tame . . . “Gentry’s best book yet!”—Janelle Taylor, New York Times bestselling author Praise for Georgina Gentry and the Panorama of the Old West series “Another wonderful battle-of-the-sexes novel . . . a most enjoyable read.”—Booklist (starred review) “Sharp, sexy repartee . . . filled with wit and ribald humor, double-crosses and heated passion, this is the most delightful Western of the season.”—Romantic Times “Ms. Gentry writes tantalizing love scenes by creating an ambience of romance.”—Rendezvous "Nobody does it like Georgina Gentry!"— Barbra Critiques

Download Music in the Westward Expansion Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Over 400,000 people moved their families in search of a better life in the American West during the Westward Expansion. The pioneers made room for musical instruments with their guns, food, and tools, while taking only the minimal necessities that would fit into modest wagons. During what seemed like an interminable dusty journey, music was often the sole source of light and happiness for these exhausted travelers. This book examines the roles of music in the Westward Expansion and the diverse cultural landscape of the Old West, including northern Cheyenne courtship flute makers, fiddle-playing explorers, dancing fur trappers, hymn-singing missionaries, frontier flutists, girls with guitars, wagon-driving balladeers, poetic cowboys, singing farmers, musical miners, and preaching songsters.

Responding to the rapid spread of the Ghost Dance among tribes of the western United States in the early 1890s, James Mooney set out to describe and understand the phenomenon. He visited Wovoka, the Ghost Dance prophet, at his home in Nevada and traced the progress of the Ghost Dance from place to place, describing the ritual and recording the distinctive song lyrics of seven separate tribes. His classic work (first published in 1896 and here reprinted in its entirety for the first time) includes succinct cultural and historical introductions to each of those tribal groups and depicts the Ghost Dance among the Sioux, the fears it raised of an Indian outbreak, and the military occupation of the Sioux reservations culminating in the tragedy at Wounded Knee. Seeking to demonstrate that the Ghost Dance was a legitimate religious movement, Mooney prefaced his study with a historical survey of comparable millenarian movements among other American Indian groups. In addition to his work on the Ghost Dance, James Mooney is best remembered for his extraordinarily detailed studies of the Cherokee Indians of the Southeast and the Kiowa and other tribes of the southern plains, and for his advocacy of American Indian religious freedom.

Many Kiowas believe that song is a gift from God. Its power, argues Luke E. Lassiter, rests in the many ways that community members hear, understand, and feel it: "Song has power. As I begin to understand what this means for my mentors, I am just beginning to understand what this means in my life. They are not just singers. They are vehicles for something greater than all of us. Indeed, I now understand that I am not just a singer. But . . . I will sing until I die." As a boy, Lassiter had an early fascination with pow wows. This interest eventually went from a hobby to a passion. As Lassiter made Kiowa friends who taught him to sing and traveled the pow wow circuit, serving many times as a head singer, he began to investigate and write about the pow wow as an experiential encounter with song. The Power of Kiowa Song shows how song is interpreted, created, and used by individuals, how it is negotiated through the context of an event, and how it emerges as a powerfully unique and specific public expression. The Power of Kiowa Song presents a collaborative, community-wide dialogue about the experience of song. Using conversations with Kiowa friends as a frame, Lassiter seeks to describe the entire experience of song rather than to analyze it solely from a distance. Lassiter's Kiowa consultants were extremely active in the writing of the book, re-explaining concepts that seemed difficult to grasp and discussing the organization and content of the work. In a text that is engaging and easily read, Lassiter has combined experiential narrative with ethnological theory to create a new form of collaborative ethnography that makes anthropology accessible to everyone. This book is designed for anyone interested in Native American studies or anthropology, and it also serves as a resource written by and for the Kiowa themselves. Hear the Power of Kiowa Song
