This book covers major areas of modern Colloid and Surface Science (in some countries also referred to as Colloid Chemistry) which is a broad area at the intersection of Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Material Science investigating the disperse state of matter and surface phenomena in disperse systems. The book arises of and summarizes the progress made at the Colloid Chemistry Division of the Chemistry Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) over many years of scientific, pedagogical and methodological work. Throughout the book the presentation of fundamental theoretical and experimental approaches and results is combined with discussion of general scientific basis of their role in nature and applications in various technological processes.

Excerpt from The Colloidal and Crystalloidal State of Matter IN the last decade the colloidal state of matter, or, in other words, substances in the colloidal state, (in contradistinction to those in the amorphous or crystalloidal) have come to the front technically and scientifically. This region of work covers a very wide field, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics and physio logy; in all these branches knowledge of this kind has proved fruitful, and will do so still more. But the scope of this field must be extended still further technology and agriculture, mineralogy and geology feel its effects; and since spontaneous gene ration must presumably be sought in the colloidal state, modern natural philosophy cannot pass over this line of division between the monistic and dualistic conceptions of the universe without taking up a firm position here. This book addresses the properties of particles in colloidal suspensions. It has a focus on particle aggregates and the dependency of their physical behaviour on morphological parameters. For this purpose, relevant theories and methodological tools are reviewed and applied to selected examples. The book is divided into four main chapters. The first of them introduces important measurement techniques for the determination of particle size and interfacial properties in colloidal suspensions. A further chapter is devoted to the physico-chemical properties of colloidal particles—highlighting the interfacial phenomena and the corresponding interactions between particles. The book’s central chapter examines the structure-property relations of colloidal aggregates. This comprises concepts to quantify size and structure of aggregates, models and numerical tools for calculating the (light) scattering and hydrodynamic properties of aggregates, and a discussion on van-der-Waals and double layer interactions between aggregates. It is illustrated how such knowledge may significantly enhance the characterisation of colloidal suspensions. The final part of the book refers to the information, ideas and concepts already presented in order to address technical aspects of the preparation of colloidal suspensions—in particular the performance of relevant dispersion techniques and the stability of colloidal suspensions.

This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the 8th Conference on Colloid Chemistry. It was hosted by the Hungarian Chemical Society and organized by Budapest University of Technology and Economics and was held in Keszthely, Hungary in September 2002. A colloidal approach to nano science was one of the main topics of the meeting. It was revealed that the colloid science provides a strong background of the modern material science and nanotechnology. This volume is intended for professionals doing fundamental research or development of industrial applications, who encounter colloid particles, colloid structures, and interface phenomena during their work.
