Excerpt from Chats With the Little Ones I have kept the idea of the school-room, where the children are supposed to meet day after day to recite and converse with their teacher, who leads them on by a series of conversations from one ideato another, thus forming an unbroken chain from the first chapter to the last. If in some instances I should seem more explicit than would apparently be necessary to American readers it has been from the fear of breaking the perfect chain, which is the charm of the book. I have also in many oases been abrupt in introducing subjects widely apart from the topic of the hour. This in the original is done to explain some French word that the children do not yet understand, and it could not be wholly omitted without destroying the harmony of the chapter. While I have endeavored to express, as nearly as possible, the same ideas in English as in the French of Dr. Sauveur, I have carefully avoided a literal trans lation. Many of the anecdotes and several complete chapters are taken from the Petites Causeries, some of the former replacing conversations in the Causeries aveo les Enfants, which are useful only to explain French words, and have no interest for an American reader. This mingling of the two books makes it impossible to use the English one as a key to either of the F reneh originals; a possibility I have dili gently studied to avoid, as it would be utterly contrary to Dr. Sauveur's system of teaching. This book, therefore, is independent in itself. It is hoped that it will be useful in two ways: as a pleasant story-book for mothers to read to their children, or for children who are old enough to read by themselves and as a reading-bbok in schools for our little ones. The books employed in such schoolshave, too often, little interest, containing words rather than ideas. The conversations in the following chap ters, while extremely simple in themselves, open the way to more advanced thought, enabling the teacher to expand the ideas, according to his or her judgment. Excerpt from Chats on Writers and Books, Vol. 1 Lawyer and critic, John N. Crawford's career as a newspaper writer and essayist was determined by temperament rather than by design. He was a profound and painstaking student and he was a reader who remembered and applied the knowledge that he gained. He had what is called a judicial mind. He was too studious, too generous and too well disposed toward the truth to be a mere advocate or a partisan. With his legal training he would have made a great and good judge. If learning alone were required to make a great lawyer he would have been distinguished at the bar. But temperament, which, in his case, made strife and controversy distasteful, decreed that his successes should be achieved in journalism rather than in law. Abandoning the law, he nevertheless was a lawyer in journalism. In most of his writings, which were very voluminous, he never lost the propensity of the conscientious lawyer to weigh evidence carefully and to express convictions in language just and judicial. Excerpt from Chats: Now Talked of This and Then of That The story of the way in which the writer of these pages came to be called Our Tender by those to whom her words were addressed is too long to repeat, but the name is so interwoven with the tissue of the Chats that to take it from them would change their whble character and make them unfamiliar to her old readers, and so she retains it, trusting that her new friends, if she should acquire any, will soon become accus tomed to it, and will permit her to call them also, her boys and girls. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Monday-Chats N selecting from the many volumes of the Cause I ries da Lundi the essays required for the present work, the translator has experienced no little difficulty. The difficulty, as every reader of sainte-beuve will readi ly suppose, has not been the dearth of material, but the embarrassment of riches. The final decision has been influenced by two considerations, - a desire to choose themes of intrinsic and permanent interest, and a desire to give a due variety. That the translator has done justice to the original in this attempt to reproduce in English some of the masterpieces of modern French criticism, he is very far from flattering himself. If the best translation, even of a third or fourth rate author is inevitably but the seamy side of the cloth, then he may well despair Who has undertaken to convey in Eng lish the curiosa felicitas, the subtle graces, and the deli cate refinements of sainte-beuve's style. Adequately to do so would imply a genius hardly inferior to that of sainte-beuve himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
