In her teenage years, Katherine Moore Davis felt that something was missing in her life. In Chasing the Early Church Experience, she details her search for the missing link. By asking questions and exploring a wide range of sources - books, cassette tapes, cds, etc. Dr. Katherine shares a close up glimpse into the life of the poster child of a defeated Christian. Her quest took her to many places and before many people. Ultimately, she found the answers in the greatest book of all time: the Bible. In her search, Dr. Katherine discovered the secret of the early church—one that she now outlines for others to learn. She identifies areas and practices that the early church modeled and that can be used today to achieve a successful lifestyle. She also explores great exploits of the early church while following Jesus, the Head of the church. By tracing the pattern of the early church found in the book of Acts, Dr. Katherine commits fully to restoring Fivefold Ministry to the Body of Christ. This study presents an examination of early church practices that can be used in the modern world to revive our spiritual lives.

How and why did the early church grow in the first four hundred years despite disincentives, harassment, and occasional persecution? In this unique historical study, veteran scholar Alan Kreider delivers the fruit of a lifetime of study as he tells the amazing story of the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Challenging traditional understandings, Kreider contends the church grew because the virtue of patience was of central importance in the life and witness of the early Christians. They wrote about patience, not evangelism, and reflected on prayer, catechesis, and worship, yet the church grew--not by specific strategies but by patient ferment.

Understanding the role of religion in global politics is crucial for effective diplomacy. Many American policy makers are squeamish about religion’s role in diplomacy. Nevertheless, religion plays a crucial and complex part in global affairs, such as in sustainable development, various human rights issues, and fomenting and mitigating conflict. Shaun A. Casey, the founding director of the US Department of State’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs, makes a compelling case for the necessity of understanding global religion in Chasing the Devil at Foggy Bottom. In this fresh and provocative narrative, Casey writes frankly about his work integrating sophisticated, research-driven policy into the State Department under Secretary of State John Kerry. Their new strategy went beyond older paradigms that focused myopically on religious freedom or countering violent extremism. Such reductive approaches, Casey insists, cost thousands of lives and trillions of dollars in the US’s ill-fated invasion of Iraq in 2003. Witty and astute, Casey recounts his team’s challenges in DC politics as well as in the major global events of his tenure, including climate change, the rise of ISIL, and the refugee crisis. On a global stage with higher stakes than ever, effective diplomacy is imperative. Yet in this critical moment, the United States’s reputation has faltered. Chasing the Devil at Foggy Bottom offers a path forward to better foreign policy.

The hard work required to make God real, how it changes the people who do it, and why it helps explain the enduring power of faith How do gods and spirits come to feel vividly real to people—as if they were standing right next to them? Humans tend to see supernatural agents everywhere, as the cognitive science of religion has shown. But it isn’t easy to maintain a sense that there are invisible spirits who care about you. In How God Becomes Real, acclaimed anthropologist and scholar of religion T. M. Luhrmann argues that people must work incredibly hard to make gods real and that this effort—by changing the people who do it and giving them the benefits they seek from invisible others—helps to explain the enduring power of faith. Drawing on ethnographic studies of evangelical Christians, pagans, magicians, Zoroastrians, Black Catholics, Santeria initiates, and newly orthodox Jews, Luhrmann notes that none of these people behave as if gods and spirits are simply there. Rather, these worshippers make strenuous efforts to create a world in which invisible others matter and can become intensely present and real. The faithful accomplish this through detailed stories, absorption, the cultivation of inner senses, belief in a porous mind, strong sensory experiences, prayer, and other practices. Along the way, Luhrmann shows why faith is harder than belief, why prayer is a metacognitive activity like therapy, why becoming religious is like getting engrossed in a book, and much more. A fascinating account of why religious practices are more powerful than religious beliefs, How God Becomes Real suggests that faith is resilient not because it provides intuitions about gods and spirits—but because it changes the faithful in profound ways.

The Chase is the second of the three-volume continuum entitled The Hunt. Volume 1 was entitled The Search. It recorded my search for historical documents that confirmed the truth about the life of Jesus, as recorded in the four Gospels of the Bible. Volume 2, The Chase, is a record of the application of the documentation found in The Search, to the truth regarding the life of Jesus, as recorded in the four Gospels of the Bible. Volume 3, The Find, will use historical documents found and applied to the life of Jesus to identify and conform his position as Messiah, forgiving Savior and Eternal King. The second volume, The Chase, of the set of three explores the earthly life of Jesus within the context of known Greco-Roman history, customs, philosophies, and manners of the time. Jesus was born into this world during the time of the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus (January 27 BC to August 14 AD). He lived, ministered and was put to death during the reign of Roman emperor Caesar Tiberius (September 14 AD to March 37 AD). Jesus was born into part of the world governed by Herod the Great, a vassal king appointed by the emperor.
