Excerpt from Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 74: A Southern Journal of Medicine and Surgery; July, 1916 Dr. Eugene B.Glenn was born in Buncombe County, N. C, June 21, 1871. His father is Marion Sevier Glenn. Both of his parents are native North Carolinians. His Grandfather, Eli Glenn, was born in Eastern North Carolina, in 1812. At the age of eighteen he wended his way across the Blue Ridge and settled in Buncombe County. Dr. Glenn lived and worked on his father's farm until he was seventeen years old, attending free school in the winter, and developing muscle and brawn on the farm in summer. From 1887 to 1889 he was in high school and from there he was placed under a private instructor. He was ambitious for a better education and continued study at Weaver College, Weaverville, N. C., graduating with the class of 1891. In September, 1892, he began the study of medicine at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa., from which he was graduated in 1896 at the head of his class. After graduating he worked as physician in St. Timothy's Hospital, Roxborough, Philadelphia, laying a solid foundation for the superstructure which he has built. After spending some time in the Philadelphia hospitals he returned to North Carolina, secured his license to practice medicine in this State in 1896 and joined the North Carolina Medical Society in 1899. Since that date he has been a regular attendant and only on very few occasions has he failed to read papers at the annual meetings. Usually his paper deals with some surgical subject, giving his experiences which are always listened to with great interest and are considered invaluable among surgeons. On surgical subjects his ideas are excellent and logically presented. His style of writing is always attractive when dealing with his favorite subjects. In 1912 he joined the Tri-State Medical Association of the Carolinas and Virginia. He has taken great interest in that organization. At the Charleston meeting in 1915 he read a paper entitled, "Malignancy of the Ovaries: Report of Case Complicating Pregnancy." It received the applause and commendation of all the members present. As a young physician he had the foresight to see the need in Asheville, N. C, and the will to meet it. That city is still his home and the scene of his varied and extraordinary activities. Since his location he has worked in Asheville Hospital, 1901 - 1904; Biltmore Hospital, 1904 - 1913, and in Meriwether Hospital since 1913. At the death of Dr. F. T. Meriwether in June, 1913, a staff of sixteen physicians was organized, and Dr. Glenn was elected Vice-Dean, and by virtue of that office he became Chief of the surgical staff. In this institution he is also instructor of student nurses in surgical nursing. His has never been an idle existence even for a day. When his general practice warranted the opportunity Dr. Glenn has sought to perfect his knowledge and skill by doing post-graduate work at Philadelphia Polyclinic, Jefferson Medical College Hospital, Mayo Clinics, and various other hospitals in Chicago, Nashville, Louisville, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. Surgery has always been his principal specialty. His surgical work has increased by leaps and bounds, and he has necessarily given up general practice to a great extent. The medical societies have felt the worth of this efficient surgeon. He has been chairman on various sections of the State Medical Society, and he was elected President of the Buncombe County Medical Society for the year of 1915. Aside from this, he is connected with the American Medical Association and Mississippi Valley Medical Association. He attended the Clinical Congress of Surgeons of North America in Boston in 1915; he also attended the Congress when it met in New York in 1913, and in Chicago in 1914. Dr. Glenn has become invaluable to the civic life of his city. About a month after his location in Asheville he received ...

Excerpt from The Charlotte Medical Journal, Vol. 15: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; July, 1899 Antipyreti'cs are the remedies with which We reduce temperature and when we come to consider the fact that nearly all diseases with which we meet are accompanied with more or less fever, we at once see that these remedies have a wide field of usefulness in therapeutics. Notwithstanding the fact that some diseases may run a long and fatal course without' fever, we will always find the careful physician taking the tempera ture of his patients often, and when he finds any considerable rise above the nor mal, some antipyretic is usually given. This practice may be, and I believe is, the proper one to pursue in most cases, the mis take we usually make, I think, is in the selection of an antipyretic.
