Genetic diversity is one of the main resources sustaining human life. Food security largely depends on the availability and utilization of this diversity, which is of strategic importance for countries and companies. Is it at all possible to give a complete picture of the diversity in a crop or wild species? Are we, by adding new technologies, only revealing parts of the diversity? Do different sets of data show similar or conflicting pictures of genetic diversity? Will the large genome size reduce the role of barley as a model organism in these current sequencing days? Tigray region is characterized by an erratic rainfall where heavy rain swap with dry periods resulting in alternating floods and dry periods. Therefore, barley materials developed for arid and semi-arid areas were introduced from ICARDA. The over all objective of this study was to estimate the extent of genetic variability, association among characters and to estimate genetic divergence among the genotypes and to cluster them in divergent groups. Sixty four barley genotypes were tested in 8x8 simple lattice design at Atsbi, Ofla and Quiha environments in Tigray region, in 2009/10 cropping season. Analysis of variance revealed that there was a significant difference among the genotypes for the traits Days to heading, Days to maturity, Spike length, Number of Productive tillers /m2, Number of Kernels per spike, Biological yield, Grain yield, Harvest index, Germination Test and 1000-kernel weight in all locations except plant height was non-significant at Atsbi and Ofla.

Among the characters studied, harvest index, number of kernels per spike, biomass yield, and 1000-kernel weight were more heritable, high in variability and genetic advance compared to grain yield with somehow good association with grain yield, with the first two of these traits has positive association with each other while the last two traits were also positively correlated with each other. However, the associations among the two groups were negative. Hence, it is important to compromise selection among these traits to take care of the negative correlations among them and to bring about sufficient improvement in grain yield. Generally, selection for good biomass yield with increased harvest index, and restricted selection for number of kernels per spike and 1000-kernel weight could be useful as indirect selection criteria for improving grain yield.
