Excerpt from Our National Resources: And How They Are Wasted; An Omitted Chapter in Political Economy The attention of the writer of the following pages was first specially directed to the subject treated therein, in the autumn of 1868. During the whole of the years 1867 and 1868, the trade of the United Kingdom, but especially the cotton trade, was in a most depressed condition. The year 1869 was ushered in; but, instead of there being an improvement, so far at least as the cotton trade went, matters grew worse. The belief at that time was almost universal in Lancashire, that the depressed condition of trade arose from the fact that our continental neighbours were outstripping us in manufacturing, and that they were still more certain to outstrip us in the future; and, consequently, the great cotton trade of Lancashire would shortly be a thing of the past. Download Chapters on Practical Political Economy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Chapters on Practical Political Economy: Being the Substance of Lectures Delivered in the University of Oxford His followers have not been contented with the low level on which their great master stood. They have fretted against the walls of the narrow space in which his Political Economy, as they thought, had confined them. They conceived it to be a science to be treated by the scientific method. Their ambition was to make Political Economy take the form of a strict science. Their language took a highly scientific character. Political economists were teachers of a great science. They spoke of economical laws as astronomers speak of the law of gravitation, and chemists of chemical afiinity. The doctrines which they developed were held to soar far above the ideas of the exchange, the factory or the workshop. They framed elaborate treatises, of which they required men to become students. Such were not Adam Smith and his ideas: had they reduced him to a mere beginner? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Can national growth be sustained indefinitely? How much should government intervene in a competitive market economy? The questions John Stuart Mill raised a century and a half ago, in 1848's Principles of Political Economy, and the answers he found, are just as critical-and just as contentiously debated-today. Through a lens of what the philosopher himself termed "philosophical radicalism"-and what some today call "democratic liberalism"-Mill takes a fresh look at Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and other influential works of political thought of his time, and recasts them from a more scientific viewpoint, suggesting that such realities as the unequal distribution of wealth were not "natural" but rather a matter of human choice... choices we continue to have to make in our ever more complicated economy. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Selected Writings of John Stuart Mill and On Liberty. English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) was one of the foremost figure of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century. He served as an administrator in the East Indian Company from 1823 to 1858, and as a member of parliament from 1865 to 1868. Among his essays on a wide range of political and social thought are On Liberty (1859), Considerations on Representative Government (1861), and The Subjection of Women (1869).
