"The Chapman family was the first of New Zealand's legal dynasties. Henry Samuel Chapman was the first puisine judge of the Supreme Court; his son Frederick Revans Chapman was teh first New Zealand born Supreme Court judge; and another son, Martin founded one of the country's leading legal firms, which still bears his name ... This book provides a record of the lives and careers of three significant figures in nineteenth and early twentieth century colonial history. It casts light on important aspects of society and law at that time; notoably, the characteristics and values of the educated, aspirant classes, and the development of essentially English institutions and laws in the colonial environment." -- Back cover.

John A. Chapman (1780/1790-ca.1842) apparently moved from Shelby County to Coosa County, Alabama between 1830 and 1840. There were four surviving sons: Simeon, Griffith, John and Anderson. Simeon pro- bably inherited his father's property because he stayed in Alabama. Griffith moved to Texas, and later to Chattanooga, Tennessee. This book traces the genealogy of the other two sons, John and Anderson. John Chapman (ca.1798-1860/1870) was born in Tennessee, moved to Alabama (with his parents), and then via Louisiana to Denton County and then Hill County, Texas. Anderson Chapman (1811-1867) was born in Tennesse and moved to Alabama with his parents. In October 1850 he moved to Union Parish, Louisiana, and later moved up to the Red River county, and then to Cooke County, Texas and by 1859 to Denton County, Texas. Descendants and relatives also lived in Arkansas, Georgia, California and elsewhere.
