This document is presented as one of the necessary conditions that must be met to obtain a Ph.D. degree in the Engineering Faculty at Universidad de los Andes. Its purpose is three fold: first, to serve as complementary reference work on what I know is a research topic which I, and other researchers, will be following in the near future: chaos in transit systems. Second, as a tool for me in order to present a coherent compendium of the work I have been advancing on the past three years; namely the study of simplistic models of a vehicle interacting with traffic lights. Finally, in the third place, to comply with one of the Ph.D. program requisites. Throughout the time I have invested in the Ph.D. program, I have participated in various research projects within the research group that I am part of. So far I have helped to develop a conceptual model for a research center in Colombia (56), contributed to a paper that discusses how variation can be a useful concept for management (26), and focused the effort of the last years into understanding the conditions under which a simple traffic model is subject to chaos (49). This document will focus on the most recent of those projects.

Download Applied Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos of Mechanical Systems with Discontinuities Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Annotation Consisting primarily of contributions written by engineers from Europe, Asia, and the US, this volume provides a general methodology for describing, solving, and analyzing discontinuous systems. The focus is on mechanical engineering problems where clearances, piecewise stiffness, intermittent contact, variable friction, or other forms of discontinuity occur. Practical applications include vibration absorbers, percussive drilling of hard materials, and dynamics of metal cutting. Of likely interest to new and experienced researchers working in the field of applied mathematics and physics, mechanical and civil engineering, and manufacturing. Lacks a subject index. Download The Chaos and Cosmos of Kurosawa Tokiko Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The Chaos and Cosmos of Kurosawa Tokiko is the story of a self-described "base-born nobody" who tried to change the course of Japanese history. Kurosawa Tokiko (1806–1890), a commoner from rural Mito domain, was a poet, teacher, oracle, and political activist. In 1859 she embraced the xenophobic loyalist faction (known for the motto "revere the emperor, expel the barbarians") and traveled to Kyoto to denounce the shogun's policies before the emperor. She was arrested, taken to Edo's infamous Tenmachō prison, and sentenced to banishment. In her later years, having crossed the Tokugawa-Meiji divide, Tokiko became an elementary school teacher and experienced firsthand the modernizing policies of the new government. After her death she was honored with court rank for her devotion to the loyalist cause. Tokiko's story reflects not only some of the key moments in Japan's transition to the modern era, but also some of its lesser-known aspects, thereby providing us with a fresh narrative of the late-Tokugawa crisis, the collapse of the shogunate, and the rise of the Meiji state. The peculiar combination of no-nonsense single-mindedness and visionary flights of imagination evinced in her numerous diaries and poetry collections nuances our understanding of activism and political consciousness among rural nonelites by blurring the lines between the rational and the irrational, focus and folly. Tokiko's use of prognostication and her appeals to cosmic forces point to the creative paths some women constructed to take part in political debates and epitomize the resourcefulness required to preserve one's identity in the face of changing times. In the early twentieth century, Tokiko was reimagined in the popular press and her story was rewritten to offset fears about female autonomy and to boost local and national agendas. These distorted and romanticized renditions offer compelling examples of the politicization of the past and of the extent to which present anxieties shape historical memory. That Tokiko was unimportant and her loyalist mission a failure is irrelevant. What is significant is that through her life story we are able to discern the ordinary individual in the midst of history. By putting an extra in the spotlight, The Chaos and Cosmos of Kurosawa Tokiko offers a new script for the drama that unfolded on the stage of late-Tokugawa and early Meiji history.

Download Social Psychology and Social Change in Nigeria Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Governments in the developing nations of Africa invest much of their peoples scarce resources in social development programs, often without much evaluation or any knowledge of the potential outcomes. Written by a social psychology consultant, Denis Ugwuegbu, Social Psychology and Social Development in Nigeria puts forth a calm, expert, and systematic evaluation of some government policies under military dictators in Nigeria. The programs and policies studied range from government efforts to create a homogenous multicultural cohesive national unity in Nigeria to the nations perception of the Nigeria police and military coups. Social Psychology can empower a developing nation to participate in social policy democracy. Important insights, conclusions, and recommendations for action are offered along with advocacy for social development program and policy evaluation for practitioners and social scientists interested in research about national development. Social Psychology and Social Change in Nigeria is the first book of its kind to be written in Africa, for Africa and other developing nations with clarity and enough detail to make it accessible to an audience beyond professional social scientists.

Download Dynamical Chaos in Planetary Systems Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This is the first monograph dedicated entirely to problems of stability and chaotic behaviour in planetary systems and its subsystems. The author explores the three rapidly developing interplaying fields of resonant and chaotic dynamics of Hamiltonian systems, the dynamics of Solar system bodies, and the dynamics of exoplanetary systems. The necessary concepts, methods and tools used to study dynamical chaos (such as symplectic maps, Lyapunov exponents and timescales, chaotic diffusion rates, stability diagrams and charts) are described and then used to show in detail how the observed dynamical architectures arise in the Solar system (and its subsystems) and in exoplanetary systems. The book concentrates, in particular, on chaotic diffusion and clearing effects. The potential readership of this book includes scientists and students working in astrophysics, planetary science, celestial mechanics, and nonlinear dynamics.

Download Smart Economy in Smart Cities Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The present book highlights studies that show how smart cities promote urban economic development. The book surveys the state of the art of Smart City Economic Development through a literature survey. The book uses 13 in depth city research case studies in 10 countries such as the North America, Europe, Africa and Asia to explain how a smart economy changes the urban spatial system and vice versa. This book focuses on exploratory city studies in different countries, which investigate how urban spatial systems adapt to the specific needs of smart urban economy. The theory of smart city economic development is not yet entirely understood and applied in metropolitan regional plans. Smart urban economies are largely the result of the influence of ICT applications on all aspects of urban economy, which in turn changes the land-use system. It points out that the dynamics of smart city GDP creation takes ‘different paths,’ which need further empirical study, hypothesis testing and mathematical modelling. Although there are hypotheses on how smart cities generate wealth and social benefits for nations, there are no significant empirical studies available on how they generate urban economic development through urban spatial adaptation. This book with 13 cities research studies is one attempt to fill in the gap in knowledge base.
