Their descendants, the Earls of Sutherland, continued to bear the surname of Gordon throu h six or seven generations, till the beginning of the 8th c., when they exchanged it for the surname of Sutherland, which had been borne by the Countess Elizabeth before her marriage with Adam' Gordon.
