Jeff Tigchelaar doesn't so much produce poetry as rescue it - from overheard conversations and discarded letters and library-desk graffi ti and his own stray thoughts: "I'm in a manmade capsule hurtling through the sky/ so if I die I probably deserve it." This smart, serious, hilarious first book is a no-kill shelter for memorable speech. --Eric McHenry, Poet Laureate of Kansas In Certain Streets at an Uncertain Hour, Jeff Tigchelaar is our intimate tour guide through his own unique hands-on museum, from the wild and offbeat to the quiet and subtle. My favorite poems here sound like William Stafford on jumping beans. Tigchelaar demonstrates an impressive range in form, style, and tone, but what he shows throughout is that he's paying close, close attention to the world around him, with love and compassion. --Jim Daniels, author of Show and Tell: New and Selected Poems Jeff Tigchelaar in his debut collection has gathered sharply observed details of daily life into an artful collage. Here are prose poems, found poems, imagined and overheard dialogue, double abecedarians - all from his off-center point of view, always at and in play. --Wyatt Townley, 2013-2015 Kansas Poet Laureate Jeff Tigchelaar speaks directly to his readers about politics, moral choices, and the beauty he fi nds in an imperfect world. This debut collection shows a poet ready to suggest solutions. Join him as he makes a difference. --Denise Low, Melange Block author, 2007-2009 Kansas Poet Laureate"

A.D. 66: Having been falsely implicated in a plot to assassinate the emperor Nero, Titus Petronius has a choice: await the executioner at dawn, or die a noble Roman death by his own hand. Deciding that his will be a suicide like no other the world has ever seen, he summons a small circle of intimate friends to his magnificent villa on the enchanting Tyrrhenian coast of southern Italy. There, over the course of a balmy autumn's night, Petronius throws the party of a lifetime. As they feast on course after course of the most sumptuous and exotic fare the empire has to offer, his guests are expressly forbidden to dwell on the imminent tragedy; instead, they are enjoined to sing, eat, drink, and celebrate. But as his life dwindles to a few precious hours, Petronius himself cannot shake off the ghosts of his past or his regret over mistakes that can no longer be set right. With the fateful dawn approaching, he recalls the great love affair of his life, and his years as Nero's "Arbiter of Elegance." Not until the very end will he bequeath his magnum opus, The Satyricon, to posterity. Exquisitely written and profoundly moving, The Uncertain Hour is a vivid portrait of life in ancient Rome and a gripping entrée into the mind of a great man during his final hours. PRAISE: "Lush and sorrowful...splendid...lusciously described... gorgeous."-The New York Observer "The Uncertain Hour is that very rare thing - a historical novel of love and ideas not only free of pedantry, but also serious and entertaining. Browner has done a fine and meticulous job borrowing from the actual "Satyricon" dishes for Petronius' lovingly described last supper...a rewarding new novel."-Los Angeles Times

Up until the mid-1980s most pragmatic analysis had been done on spoken language use, considerably less on written use, and very little at all on literary activity. This has now radically changed. ‘Pragmatics’ could be informally defined as the study of relationships between language and its users. This volume, first published in 1991, seeks to reposition literary activity at the centre of that study. The internationally renowned contributors draw together two main streams. On the one hand, there are concerns which are close to the syntax and semantics of mainstream linguistics, and on the other, there are concerns ranging towards anthropological linguistics, socio- and psycholinguistics. Literary Pragmatics represents an antidote to the fragmenting specialization so characteristic of the humanities in the twentieth century. This book will be of lasting value to students of linguistics, literature and society. Roger D. Sell discusses the reissue of Literary Pragmatics here: http://www.routledge.com/articles/roger_d._sell_discusses_the_reissue_of_literary_pragmatics/

This memoir describes a long and unusual life that started in eastern Turkey in 1896 in a house with an earthen floor, and ended in middle-class comfort in suburban Toronto nearly a century later. The author was an eyewitness to the first genocide of the 20th century, a horror in which most of his family was lost. He lived through the first World War and the Bolshevik Revolution that led to the creation of the Soviet Union. He fled from Soviet Armenia, first to Moscow and then to London. From there he went with wife and baby daughter to Toronto, where he faced the task of earning a living during the Great Depression. Caught up in this swirl of historical forces he describes in fascinating detail his remarkable story of survival. And, perhaps not the least remarkable fact of this life, he was over 80 years of age when he began writing his life story. There is much here to stimulate and educate, not only those who wish to know more about the Armenian Diaspora, but everyone with an interest in the human condition as it was experienced in other places and in another time.
