Some of the stockholders in the East had little confidence in the future of the business and were anxious to dispose, of the holdings of land and wind up the affairs of the company. On the other hand the resident manager was firmly convinced of the great future of the Red River Valley and of the business of which he was the active head. He acquired additional stock in the corporation and at the time of his death, in 1892, he owned more than half of the outstand ing stock. He had also acquired considerable land in his own name and established a general store in the vicinity of Amenia. In 1886 he moved his family from Connecticut to North Dakota. His son in -la11 and his gi andsons, 11 ho have since been associated in the em te1 prise, came with him.
