"The project of registering all cemeteries and graves in Martin County was initiated in 1963 by the Martin County Historical Society. The purpose was to compile the data in book form as a memorial to the early settlers buried here, and as a source of information for the general public and for historical and genealogical research ... In 1971 it became clear that the work should be brought to a close as soon as possible lest something prevent its completion ... The Shoals News and The Loogootee Tribune, have been checked and the names, birth and death dates, and the places of burial have been recorded from 1964 to December 1971, inclusive.
