A Preface! What an order! I would as soon write another volume; it certainly would be the easier task of the twain. It has to be done, of course; but how, I don't know. I never wrote a Preface in my life. I have not the least idea how to set about it; though I am in an utter agony of apprehension, lest defects in this absolute necessity should "mull" the effect of the whole. I have consulted a friend on the subject, who says: "Pooh! if you can write a book full of sketches, you can write a Preface;" and he says it as glibly as if it is nothing more difficult than an acceptance of a dinner invitation, and can be dashed off at a moment's notice.
