The motivation for this study was the remarkable ability of the brain to categorize musical styles, based solely on the information conveyed by the music. It was assumed that a computer system could accomplish similar results based only on the musical notation, and that an effective categorization of styles should reveal the main conceptual dimensions of tonal music style. The most outstanding characteristics of this study are its quantitative nature and the effort to avoid the subjectivity of structural analysis, considering only observable, measurable features. The work has been carried out exclusively on the basis of numerical continuous variables resulting from actual measurements effected by software on those aspects of musical style that are detectable in notation. The numerical data set resulting from the measurements suffices to allow data mining algorithms such as CART, Random Forests and GEP, to map music pieces to a multidimensional space and classify them by composer, with an accuracy related to the size of the database. This system has great potential in the areas of empirical musicology and authorship studies, and as the basis for a scientific theory of style.

Abstract : The objective of this study is to identify the main conceptual dimensions of tonal musical style in order to provide a theoretical understanding of the phenomenon which could constitute the basis for a scientic taxonomy of styles. Music style is a substantial quality of the musical material that can be readily recognized as belonging to individual composers or associated with their epoch. I was initially attracted to the topic through the knowledge of the successes of literary stylometry, in the expectation that similar accomplishments could have been achieved in the realm of music. I was surprised to nd that, although musical style is a notion whose meaning seems familiar to everybody, it is conceptually elusive and had not been the object of a scientic enquiry. Therefore, music style became the core of the project. The most outstanding characteristics of this study are its quantitative nature and the eort to avoid subjectivity, considering only observable, measurable features. The work has been carried out exclusively on the basis of numerical continuous variables resulting from actual measurements eected by software. In order to accomplish this goal, I was concerned exclusively with those aspects of musical style that are detectable in notation. The traditional paradigm of problems of this sort consists of taking a large number of measurements on representative samples expressing the phenomenon under study, and then submitting them to statistical analyses that could be expected to lead to the determination of its main conceptual dimensions. Consequently, the methods comprised several stages. The project began by creating a database of music scores that tried to represent adequately the stylistic spectrum of the period of common practice. Since most of the stylistic elements of interest are key-dependent, the next and crucial step was to determine the key at every point in the score. This was accomplished following the method developed during my own previous research, whose result is a tonal map of the musical score.

Tonal music, from a historical perspective, is far from homogenous; yet an enduring feature is a background "diatonic" system of exactly seven notes orderable cyclically by fifth. What is the source of the durability of the diatonic system, the octave of which is representable in terms of two particular integers, namely 12 and 7? And how is this durability consistent with the equally remarkable variety of musical styles — or languages — that the history of Western tonal music has taught us exist? This book is an attempt to answer these questions. Using mathematical tools to describe and explain the Western musical system as a highly sophisticated communication system, this theoretical, historical, and cognitive study is unprecedented in scope and depth. The author engages in intense dialogue with 1000 years of music-theoretical thinking, offering answers to some of the most enduring questions concerning Western tonality. The book is divided into two main parts, both governed by the communicative premise. Part I studies proto-tonality, the background system of notes prior to the selection of a privileged note known as "final." After some preliminaries that concern consonance and chromaticism, Part II begins with the notion "mode." A mode is "dyadic" or "triadic," depending on its "nucleus." Further, a "key" is a special type of "semi-key" which is a special type of mode. Different combinations of these categories account for tonal variety. Ninth-century music, for example, is a tonal language of dyadic modes, while seventeenth-century music is a language of triadic semi-keys. While portions of the book are characterized by abstraction and formal rigor, more suitable for expert readers, it will also be of value to anyone intrigued by the tonal phenomenon at large, including music theorists, musicologists, and music-cognition researchers.
