Excerpt from Catalogue of the Public Library of Brookline, 1865 It will be noticed from the catalogue, that, in some departments of the Library, there are as yet few works. We would particularly men tion mathematics, grammar, geography, and theology. Scarcely any purchases have been made for the department of theology: the works belonging to the Library in this department have been received by gift. These departments in due time will undoubtedly receive. Their proper attention. The following catalogue Of the Library is the third which has been compiled. It is hoped, the method of arrangement adopted, though differing from that Of the previous catalogues, will offer still greater advantage to those who use the Library, and afford, at the same time, an easy method of finding a book. It is, to a great extent, a treble index; giving the book under author and. Title, and under its subject. A knowledge of either will generally insure the finding a work of which one may be in search. There are books, whose author's name does not appear, and others which cannot be classified, such books have been entered but once or twice. Nearly every entry has been reduced to a single line; such words of the title being retained as were thought to afford the best key to the book. The figures in the margin, at the right of the title, indicate the alcove and shelf where the book is placed. The Library, from its commencement, has been Open to the public, on the afternoons and evenings of Tuesday and Friday; but it is hoped, that, during the coming season, it may be Opened upon at least three days in each week. Upon these days, books can be taken out, or examined, according to the Rules, - a copy of which is hereto added. Books Of reference, and others, which, by vote of the trustees, cannot be taken from the Library, will be designated by the Librarian.
