Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fourteenth Annual Exhibition of the Architectural League of New York: In the Galleries of the American Fine Arts Society, 215 West Fifty-Seventh St., From Saturday, Feb. 11th, to Saturday, March 4th, Inclusive, MDCCCXCIX In this steady development from utility per se to utility allied with beauty, the sculptors and painters are playing an important part. The work of the former is con nected with that of the architect in two ways. Directly, the sculptor is being called upon to supply the plastic enrichment of buildings, both within and without; indirectly, to furnish statues and memorials for the adornment of streets and public places, where the proximity of buildings makes the problem partly an architectural one. In both directions he seeks to have his work judged, not only for its individual qualities, but also in relation to the environment for which it has been planned. Exactly the same conditions, modified by his particular medium, afiect the painter when he works with the architect. In view of the variety of his mediums - paint, glass, wood and mosaic - he might be more fitly called the colorist. He adds the bloom to the ripening fruit. If you would adequately judge the result of his labors, you must seek it where it is set upon walls or in windows. What is shown in this exhibition is, for the most part, the original idea as he conceived it and jotted it down, or the same idea worked out one step farther into a full-sized cartoon. In both cases, they were made, not for exhibition purposes to catch the eye by their prettiness, but to work by.
