Excerpt from Catalogue of Select Annual, Biennial, and Perennial Flower Seeds Practicable labor, when directed only to the department of the flower garden. On the contrary, those whose location is on still, clayey soil, may correct it by the free use of sand of any description; pure river sand for in stance, is quite suitable, the immediate Object not being to enrich, but to render less adhesive; the sand should be thoroughly incorporated with the natural soil, as deeply as may well be done with the spade, and if the texture be a stiff clay, it may be necessary to trench-dig, so as to get a still deeper soil of the proper kind. In deed, in some cases it may be found necessary to under drain, which is done in a variety of modes; the most simple of which is by digging trenches a few inches in width, and so deep as not to be disturbed by the culture of the crops, which trenches, after being partially filled up with pieces of bricks, shells, coarse gravel, or similar substances, are entirely closed with soil; these drains, however, are of but partial use, unless they have a rea sonable descent, and discharge beyond the boundaries of the garden. Excerpt from Catalogue of Rare and Beautiful Flower Seeds, Garden Seeds, &C. For the Spring of 1876 Hardy perennials. - The common and large-seeded kinds may he sown in the open borders any time in April, but the rare and more delicate Species will succeed with greater certainty if raised in a close frame, with or without bot tom heat; thus treated, nearly all will flower the first season if sown early and planted out the early part'of May. All those with very small seeds should be sown under glass. Amateurs will do well to bear in mind that though many Perennial seeds vegetate as quickly as those of Annuals, there are some others which usually remain dormant for weeks or even months; to this class belong the Cyclamens, Paeonies, Fraxinella, &c. Our native Perennials are best sown in autumn, or as soon as gathered, and they will then vegetate the following spring. As this is not always practicable, the plan of steeping the seeds before sowing, for twenty-four hours, may be adopted with great advantage in many cases. Half-hardy Perennials require the same treatment as hardy Perennials, differing only in their need of winter protection. 'S Descriptive Annual Catalogue of Flower Seeds With Practical Directions for Their Culture and Treatment, 1872: Also, a Choice List of Beautiful French Hybrid Gladiolus, and Other Spring Bulbous Roots The second sowing to succeed the first, should be a month or six weeks after it. They may also be sown in pots the beginning of April, if they can have the protection of a cucumber frame or green-house. The soil for pots in which to sow them, should be light and rich; and when sown in the garden, the earth should be made fine, and if light compost, such as a mixture of garden soil and old manure in equal parts it will advance the growth and strength of the plants if a spadeful is placed where each patch of seed is to be sown. The most effective way is, to sow the seed in patches where they are intended to bloom. All small seeds should only be covered with soil an eighth of an inch deep but large seeds, such as Sweet Peas, should be planted at a depth of an inch or so. Care must be taken to give support to such Annuals as require it, whether climbers or not as soon as they are three or four inches high, otherwise they will trail on the ground and not grow strong. The earth around each patch of Flowers must be kept loose and open by the hoe, and free from weeds. In dry weather, some may require water but none need be given at the time of sowing, unless the soil is very dry. Where there is the convenience of garden frames with glass lights, Hardy Annuals and also Biennials, may be sown in September, in small patches, six inches apart - to be removed by taking each patch up in the following May (being careful to remove them with a good ball of earth, and immediately giving water, when they can be placed in the borders. In this case, the frames should not be covered with glass after sowing until the Fall rains or Frost render it necessary, - and in mild weather, during Winter, air should be given by elevating the light in the middle of the day, whenever the temperature is above the freezing point. Excerpt from 1873 J. M. Thorburn and Co. 'S Descriptive Annual Catalogue of Flower Seeds, With Practical Directions for Their Culture and Treatment: Also, a Choice List of Beautiful French Hybrid Gladiolus, and Other Spring Bulbous Roots Calceolarias. - May be treated as Annuals, and by eliminating all the inferior plants as soon as they have flowered, a collection may be formed of original named varieties, from which valuable novelties may from time to time be selected. Sow the seed in July, in pans well drained. The seed should not be Covered, but be put under a hand-glass, or in a close shady corner of a frame. The seedling plants may be pricked out into a bed of turfy-loam, in a frame for the Winter, making no demand upon the green-house for their keeping; or they may all be potted and Win tered in the house, in which case they will begin to flower in May.' gera N I U ms. - Of all kinds are the most valuable, if treated as Annuals, as in their seedling state, the plants are peculiarly robust and tree-like, and charmingly fresh in leafage and flowers, even if amongst them there does happen to be one that s specially valuable as a Florist's flower. When grown from good seed, however, a large proportion of fine varieties and a few real novelties may be expected. The seed may be sewn on any (1 ry throughout the year, but the two best seasons are Feb ruary and August. Sow in pans filled with a good mixture in a somewhat rough state - if the surface nodules are as large as horse beans it will be none too rough. Cover with a fair sixteenth of an inch of fine soil. Put the seed pans in a heat of 60° to 70° if sown in February, but heat will not be necessary at all unless it is desired to bring the plants into flower early in the ensuing Summer. We have been accustomed to sow about the loth of March, and place the seed-pans on a sunny shelf in a cool green house, and have fine plants by the end of June, many of which begin to flower in August.
