Excerpt from Catalogue of Books in the Central Circulating Library, Vol. 3: 1904 The present volume forms the third of the Catalogue of the Central Circulating Library and includes all books added to the Library between January, 1896, and July, 1904. The various supplements which have appeared at intervals during this period have been incorporated, so that the three volumes contain a complete catalogue of the Circulating Library up to the date of publication. The Board regrets that it has not been found practicable to combine the three volumes under one alphabet, but the necessity for supplying a compact volume, containing the most recent books, at a price which would place it within the reach of all, seems to be paramount. The publication of the present volume has been delayed owing to the destruction of all the sheets at our binder's, in the great fire of April, 1904. Advantage has been taken of the necessity for reprinting by adding the titles of all books received in the interval. It may be necessary to repeat that this volume consists of two parts, the first of which contains a complete catalogue of all the books under the name of the author and in addition the titles of all the works of fiction. In the second part, the same books are arranged under general subject headings. To aid readers who are unable to find the special subject in which they may be interested, an index has been added. Failing to obtain the required information, readers are requested to consult the librarians who are frequently enabled to direct the attention to unsuspected sources. The division of Biography has increased to such an extent, that it has been thought advisable to classify it under the nationalities and subjects which would appear to make it more useful. When the life work of the subject of the memoir is confined to his own land, no difficulty arises, thus "Gladstone" would be found under "English Biography," but when the principal work of the subject was done abroad, it has been placed under that of his domicile, as "Lord Clive," which will be found under "Indian" and not under "English Biography."
