Cooperative cataloging is "the original cataloging of bibliographic items through the joint action of a group of independent libraries which make bibliographic records accessible to group members and sometimes to nonparticipating libraries as well." (ALA Glossary) The papers in this volume provide an historical perspective, discuss current programs and issues, and suggest possible answers to the issues which will have a major impact on the ability of libraries to provide bibliographic access to information resources. This report describes the background of the Association of Research Libraries Microform Project and summarizes results of the survey from which the database of the project's clearinghouse on the bibliographic control of microforms has been constructed. The Microform Project was established in 1981 to assist libraries, microform publishers, and the bibliographic utilities in their efforts to achieve bibliographic access to titles in microform sets. The primary tool in providing this assistance is a Microform Cataloging Clearinghouse, the main purposes of which are to facilitate the cataloging of titles in microform sets and prevent duplication of effort. The clearinghouse database is based on the results of a survey sent to participants in the four major bibliographic utilities as well as the few major libraries that do not participate in them. The 535 useful survey returns which were received show that a large number of libraries catalog titles in microform sets and that most of them create machine-readable records for at least some of the sets they catalog. A copy of the survey questionnaire and additional information on the survey and the clearinghouse are appended. (DMC)

Volume 6 of the series Creating the 21st-Century Academic Library is focused on academic library technical services operations, and ways that they have been transformed and reimagined for working in today’s higher education environment. The literature on the place and role of technical services, technical services librarians, technical services staff, and technical services operations has expanded and grown in the last few years as decreased budgets, a focus on essential public services, and information discovery on the Internet has driven the profession to re-examine the need or importance of this back-end (or hidden) library department. Topics discussed in this book include frameworks for the networked environment, roles for metadata librarians in the areas of research data and digital initiatives, the renewed focus on the discovery of information and its place in academic libraries, the new “normal” in academic library technical services operations, emerging roles and opportunities for technical services managers, the re-training and re-skilling of technical services staff, hidden collections and needed or unexplored areas of expertise with technical services librarians and staff, the faceted application of subject headings (FAST) and obsolete or outdated subject terminology within Library of Congress Subject Headings, and a conversation about downsizing and moving forward within a law library technical services unit.

The book first discusses librarianship, microforms and microform librarianship, non-book media in libraries, and history of microforms. The text also looks at the place of microforms in libraries. User reaction to microforms; economic advantages of microform acquisitions; and contrast, resolution, and density of microforms are discussed. The book also discusses micropublishing. Changes in publishing methods, abstracting and indexing services, bibliographical services, archives, synoptic journals, and government reports are described. The text underscores library catalogues. British National Bibliography; Scottish Libraries Co-operative Automation Project (SCOLCAP); South West Academic Libraries Co-operative Automation Project (SWALCAP); and benefits of computer-based cataloguing systems are discussed. The book also looks at data services, copyright laws, relationship of information technology and libraries, and archival potential of non-book media. The text is a good reference for readers interested in librarianship.
