From this point its course is N.w. past Kothley, Cossington, Mount Sorrel, Barrow, Loughborough, Normantou, Sutton Bonnington, and Ratcliff to the Trent, which it joins 9 B.w. of Nottingham and 8 E.s.E. of Derby. From Loughborough to its union with the Trent it divides Leics. from Notts. The course of the river lies through a rich pastoral district. Some of the most interesting scenery on its banks is between Rothley and Loughborough, Charnwood Forest being situated a short distance to the west, and a range of wolds rising above the east side of the vallej. By artificial means the river has been made navigable as far as Leicester. Its length is 40 miles. Soay, island, pa. of Bnicadale (q.v.), Skye, Invs., Sc., south-west of Loch Scavaig. It is 3 miles long by nearly 2 wide, but is nearly divided by two bays, indenting it in the middle. It rises in the north portion to 455 ft. Soberton, pa. and large scattered vil. on the Mcon, E. Hants, 15 s.w. of Petersfield; ac. 5,873; soil chalk, clnv, and loam, overlying gravel, chalk, and flint. The church of St. Peter (restored 1881) is E. Eng., Deo., and Perp. Bishop Curie died and was buried here in 1(547. There are several ancient monuments dating from 1580, and a memorial to a daughter of Dr. Walter Curie, Bishop of Winchester, (luted 1709. In the leper window is a curious piece of stained glass, the arms of the Cardinal de Beaufort. On the west front of the tower, and in the centre of the string-course beneath the parapet, there is a device of a death's head, having the head of a man with a key on one side, and the head of a woman with a pail on the other; in explanation of...
