Download Casper the Commuting Cat Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Casper became a national celebrity when newspapers ran the story of the amazing cat that regularly took the No. 3 bus on 11-mile journeys around his home town, Plymouth, in Devon. While his devoted owner, Susan Finden, had wondered where her elusive pet was disappearing to each day, Casper was brightening the lives of countless commuters as they went about their business. Bus drivers, too, were getting well-acquainted with Casper, and notices went up in their depot alerting staff that a very special passenger might board their vehicle. In fact, he became a mascot for the bus company, and pictures of him and Susan adorned No. 3 buses. When Casper was sadly killed by a car in early 2010 messages of sympathy flooded in from places as far a field as Australia and Argentina. It quickly became clear that Casper and his remarkable story had touched the lives of so many people around the world. Movingly told by the owner who loved him dearly, Casper the Commuting Catis the touching story of a very special black-and-white cat who rode the bus and stole our hearts.

Download Devil's Gate Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Devil’s Gate—the name conjures difficult passage and portends a doubtful outcome. In this eloquent and captivating narrative, Tom Rea traces the history of the Sweetwater River valley in central Wyoming—a remote place including Devil’s Gate, Independence Rock, and other sites along a stretch of the Oregon Trail—to show how ownership of a place can translate into owning its story. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, Devil’s Gate is the center of a landscape that threatens to shrink any inhabitants to insignificance except for one thing: ownership of the land and the stories they choose to tell about it. The static serenity of the once heavily traveled region masks a history of conflict. Tom Sun, an early rancher, played a role here in the lynching of the only woman ever hanged in Wyoming. The lynching was dismissed as swift frontier justice in the wake of cattle theft, but Rea finds more complicated motives that involve land and water rights. The Sun name was linked with the land for generations. In the 1990s, the Mormon Church purchased part of the Sun ranch to memorialize Martin’s Cove as the site of handcart pioneers who froze to death in the valley in 1856. The treeless, arid country around Devil’s Gate seems too immense for ownership. But stories run with the land. People who own the land can own the stories, at least for a time.

Download Some Flawed Magic Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In this beautiful new book, Some Flawed Magic, poet Patricia Caspers draws detailed portraits of relationships that span both time and place. Each poem brims with sensory detail, including a dying cow who "knelt prayer-like on front legs;" and a family sewing machine that "hides in its scratched cabinet like an ivory treasure." Against a backdrop of pastures, trees, rain-gullied snails, distant pickups, and the mildew scent of geraniums, Caspers crafts a world where, "All of my childhood/ was this: gorging on neglect, praying/ for my eyes to glow golden." By the end of the collection, the poet has studiously examined not only her own life, but the lives of her children. The book closes with infinite wisdom: "This is not grief, / but its sister perhaps, / the goodbye of growing up." Some Flawed Magic paints three generations of care, kindness, and intimacy with craftful strokes and colors. -Patricia Colleen Murphy, Author of Bully Love Patricia Casper's second collection seeks to reconcile grief with growing up. Some Flawed Magic is an equation, and Caspers solves for all the "theorems scratched...in childhood notebooks" as she maps familial stories both past and present. Caspers asks the tough questions that make us redefine who we are in relation to the people who made us and the people we shape in turn. Poets are the orators of truth and time, and Caspers asks, "Isn't the past always for sale?" Some Flawed Magi c is a record of ancestry that examines how "to break a family / to hold it together." These fervent narratives ground readers in a rich description of place where "pine-lined roads" reveal and "divulge secrets / from [their] depths." Some Flawed Magic is a wondrous coupling of memory with reality. Readers will be left tender and moved. -John McCarthy, Scared Violent Like Horses
