The story opens with an elderly priest, Romuald, answering the question if he has ever loved. He answers that he has but describes this occurrence as a bewitchment to which he fell victim. Then, he recounts the story of his first love, Clarimonde. The Vampyre is a short work of prose fiction written in 1819 by John W. Polidore. The work is often viewed as the progenitor of the romantic vampire genre of fantasy fiction. The story is about Aubrey, a young Englishman, who meets Lord Ruthven, a man of mysterious origins who has entered London society. Amazed by the elegant Lord, Aubrey travels with him through many countries no knowing Ruthven is a vampire.
